LBC Rides from the Past - August 2004

Nowhere in Particular Aug 1
Rained out-no riders. Riders: Tim Ihrig (leader)

Bossler Blast East Aug 1
Rained out. Rider Leader: Jeff DeLong

Butter Side Up Aug 1
Water, water everywhere and what a ride we had. Rain caused a postponement from 9 to noon-long enough for the flood waters to rise. Our scheduled route was along high ground except for a stretch along 772 in Brownstown where we pedaled through 6-8" of run-off from a cornfield. Cool, muddy water splashed each one and our bikes-fun! We witnessed incredible high water along the Conestoga and all of her tributaries. Because of the high humidity, we also had sweaty water dripping off our bodies. Cycling in August is so cleansing! Riders: Judy Hurlbut (leader), Jim Payton (sweep), Alan Hurlbut, John Gantz, Pam Klingensmith, Ed Mowery, Lew Hershey, John Renard, Alta Nolt, Tom Mellinger, Ellen Koppenhafer, Ray Landis and Ann Schleef.

Penryn Pancake Promenade Aug 1
Another rain-out and I had my new "Ride Leader" jersey, too! Riders: John Renard (leader)

Mt Joy Twin Kiss Ride Aug 4
We thought that we may be able to get the ride in but after a short discussion, we voted to just ride around the neighborhood. It was a good thing we did because the skies opened up and with ½ mile to go we got soaked. It was the worst storm that I've ever been caught in and, thankfully, we all made it back to our cars safely. Riders: John Renard (leader), Dick Richard (sweep), Dottie Sheehy, Pat Kruse, Pearl DeLong, Jeff DeLong, Liz Richard, Susan DeNunzio, and Maria DeNunzio.

Tour de Middletown Aug 7
Unheard of, beautiful October day in the beginning of August. Brian requested we hold to the advertised pace of 17 mph since he was on vacation last week and didn't ride much. About 5 miles into the ride, Mark promptly picked up the pace to 19 and the group including Brian followed. The pack split up and re-joined a few times and rolled into Middletown with an 18.5 average fighting a headwind. On the return trip the lead group, including Brian, pulled away and averaged 19 for the whole ride. Riders: Dirk Suereth (leader), Brian Sowatsky, Mark Buckwalter, Glenn Bastian, Tom Hunt, Ken Stadden, Kyle Awkerman, Denny White, Barry Lavender, Rick Lehman and non-LBC member Joe Hess.

Rapho Ramble Aug 7
Another beautiful day for riding bicycle. Cool, breezy and clouds to block the sun. The beginning of the ride was a little hectic, the D ride left from East Pete at the same time as the C ride. Harry Campbell was trying to drum up riders by bribing them with the offer of buying them cookies. Wake up Harry! There is more to bike riders than cookie bribes. D ride left first and we followed, the C ride started to split up early. I was going to try and keep the ride close to the advertised pace. Everyone stopped at Sheets once again the D and C ride mingled. Well almost everyone stopped at Sheets. It seems John Peregoy took a different route. I took off my long sleeve shirt and some of the people were in the bathrooms. The ride started leaving and when I left I was leading a group of four counting myself. Of course this was the best four of the group. As we rode we kept picking up riders, two here three there and then another two. My group missed a turn and we rode into Landisville and out Long Lane. There we ran into some of the other C riders. I'm not sure if it is me or the riders I attract on the rides I lead. It seems that these rides turn into free-for-alls. This might annoy some ride leaders but I like it. This gives the ride some color and flavor. I can't wait until August 22 and 28-that is when I lead again. Oh yeah, John Renard please pay more attention to where you put your front wheel. Riders: Ray Landis (Ride Leader), Lew Hershey, Steve Schmohl, Mark Engle, John Mullineaux, John Rohrkemper, Dave Kessler, Diana Rollin, John Gantz, John Peregoy, Celeste Neuhard, Eleanor Nuffort, Dick Nuffort, Joe Knepper, Mary Stadden, Chuck Wissing, Tim Barley, Sr. , John Renard, Chris Ripertella, Sylvia (late arrival due to working 11-7 shift. Rode backward to meet the group), and non-LBC members: Larry Groff, Jamie Clinton and Kay Knepper.

Tour of the Amish Country Aug 7
When I first signed up to lead this ride my main concern was how hot it was going to be. Who would of thought that the first Saturday in August the temp would start out in the low 60's and not get above 70 degrees for the whole ride. After we got out of the tree-lined streets of Lancaster and into the sunshine of beautiful eastern Lancaster County we soon warmed up. Since no one wanted to sweep I filled both leader and sweep positions. When you're the leader and sweeper you really don't know what happens to the entire group just the one's with your group. Our group had a flat, saw an egret, stopped at the Bird-in-Hand Bake Shop for the original power bar (Whoopie Pie) and had a great ride. Since I didn't see any bike carnage along the road and all cars were accounted for in the parking lot I assume everyone made it back. Riders: Don Whitehead (Ride Leader and Sweep), Mike Lutz, Craig Shreiner, Andy Charles, Rick Reisinger, Jeff DeLong, Ron Rauba, Tim Good, Rich Wagner, Angie Galgon, Scott Wagner, Diane Lausman, and non-LBC members: Ron Herr, Sean Killen, Trish Rohbach, Jason Binkley and Kevin Binkley.

Chickies Creek - Long Aug 7
The "D" stood for "DETERMINE" and we were determined to have a great ride. "D" stood for "DID" and we did. The cool weather was appreciated. Riders: Harry Campbell (Ride Leader), Barb Koppenhafer (sweep), Karen Drawbaugh, Pat Kruse, Steve Snyder, Jim Payton, J.T. Catlett, Alan Hurlbut, Judy Hurlbut, Anne Schleef, Ed Mowery, Jack Fitz, Kathy Fitz, Alta Nolt, Connie Simmons, Jonas Fisher, Janielle Willemin, John Furry, Terry Gehman, and non-LBC members: Phil Wright and Carol Weisser.

Green Dragon Aug 7
Small turnout for a C ride with only four riders showing up. We had a beautiful day for a ride. Wave at Reuben Weaver as we passed his house and then promptly took a wrong turn which added an extra 4 miles. During our off-course adventure, Damon broke a couple of spokes. Fortunately he had spares (!!) and we were soon under way again. The leader devised an alternate finish to keep the group out of downtown Ephrata on a Saturday morning. We had to do a little climbing up Mohlers Church Road, but were rewarded with a great descent down the other side. The remainder of the ride was uneventful. We rode as a group and had great conversation. Managed 15 mph. Riders: Andrew Mead (Ride Leader), Curtis Palmer Damon Schlott and Roger Sheaffer.

Covered Bridge Workers' Ride-A Pace Aug 8
A little cool for August. Hope the heat and humidity return soon. The group rode the course together utilizing only the road markings, finishing with an 18.6 average. Riders: Paul & Angela Swarm (Ride Leaders), Scott Wagner, Andrew Mead, Tim Ihrig, Barry Lavender, Tom Hunt, Greg Paulson, David Cook

Covered Bridge Worlers' Ride-B Pace Aug 8
The weather was perfect to do the Metric. Even though the wind picked up about ¾ of the way into the ride. We all had a great time. The group broke into two fairly early with Lou, Ed, Jeff, Steve, Candae and myself sticking pretty close to the advertised pace. We all had a great time and, more importantly, the route looked wonderful. Riders: John Renard (Ride Leader), Lou Gray, Rick Reisinger, Jeff DeLong, Steve Gerber, Tim Good, Don Whitehead, Mark Fuhrer, Mike Lutz, Candae Deen, Edward H. Gower, Bob Walker, Rich Wagner, Steven Schmohl, Gil Palmieri, Keith Keiser and Matt Dishart.

Covered Bridge Workers's Ride-C+Pace Aug 8
Perfect weather for a ride. Leader led entire ride from the back of the group. Did the ride without using cue sheet. Good job route markers! Riders: Rachel Kreider (Ride Leader), Lew Hershey, Ray Landis, John Cardos, Joe Knepper, John Gantz, David Sargeant, Judy Flowers, David Flowers, Dave Kessler, Roger Sheaffer, and Carl Kreider.

Covered Bridge Workers' Ride-C- Pace Aug 8
This was a lovely ride-As I was pedaling along I couldn't help think about how lucky we are to be living in Lancaster Co; to be able to cycle through such beautiful countryside with such a great group of people-all willing to volunteer to make yet another CBMC event a success. Thanks to each and everyone who rode with me today. Riders: Judy Hurlbut (Ride Leader), Alan Hurlbut (sweep), Jim Payton, Steven Snyder, John Rohrkemper, Harry Campbell, Pam Tronsor, Anne Schleef, Barb Koppenhafer, John Mullineaux, Janielle Willemin, Karen Drawbaugh, Kay Knepper, Celeste Neuhard, Eleanor Nuffort, Mary Stadden, Rose Ward, Mark Ward, John McKelvey, Sylvia Newcomer and non-LBC member Tim Hoyle.

Covered Bridge Workers' Ride-D Pace Aug 8
Riders: Steve Mentzer (Ride Leader), Dottie Sheehy (sweep), Marsha Chamberlain, Joe Achey, Sue Bowman, Pam Klingensmith, Bob and Max McGowan and non-LBC member: Carol Weisser.

East Pete to the Airport Aug 11
As usual I made a couple of wrong turns at the start of this ride (the cue may need to be revised), so Gary took the point and I tried to keep the troops together. The weather forecast was not good-which keep a lot of people away, but the eve ning turned out to be perfect and we had a great ride. We had a visitor from Jersey-Stacy-who hopefully will be back to join us again. Riders: John Renard (Ride Leader), Mary Stadden, Carol Young, Barry Lavender, Dylan Lavender, Gary Musser and non-LBC member Stacy Spwak.

Ride to Shaefferstown (A) Aug 14
Sorry for being late. Not much to report. One flat early in the ride and the ride leader got dropped. I assume that all riders had a good ride. Riders: Ron Pfautz (leader), David Hooper, Mark Buckwalters, Scott Wagner, Tom Hunt, Neil Fickes, Dale Burkholder and Dan Winter

Conewago Crusade Aug 14
No one showed. It's understandable because the Lancaster portion of the Conewago Trail is on horrendous due to the heavy rains. So the day wasn't a complete loss I did the Rheems Ramble by mountain bike. It turned out to be a great ride on a great day. Riders: Jay Holstein (Ride Leader).

Etown-Mt Joy-Etown Aug 14
With the first full day of Olympic events five riders set out on a quest to test their own athletic skills. The day turned out to be a good one and the terrain was rolling. The weather was even a little cool for the month of August. Riders: Henry Manning (Ride Leader), Kim Manning, Rick Shoup, Bill Ambler, and Randy Haluck.

Farmersville-Hinkletown Aug 14
Riders: Brian Mitchell (Ride Leader), John Donati, Tim Ihrig, Craig Shreiner, Tim Leary, Damon Schlott, Don Whitehead, John Mullineaux, Angela Swarm, Paul Swarm, Tom Rauba, Lou Gray, Andy Charles, Bill Ressel, Tony DeNunzio, Tammie Calabrese, Diane Lausman, and non-LBC member Jamie Clinton.

Charlie's Challenge Aug 14
Hurricane Charley threatening our CBMC!! Let's honor this phenomenon of nature by naming a new LBC ride after him-maybe he'll head out to sea in search of Tropical Storm Bonnie. Leader thanks everyone for riding today. Your help in spotting missing road markings, excess gravel, holes, etc. is greatly appreciated. Scout John M pedaled ahead onto Cocalico Creek Road and returned to notify us of water/mud over the road. We gladly detoured to Sheetz for snacks and chatting. Sweep John R, thank you many times, for volunteering for this pretigious role. What a great bunch. No wonder LBC is the area's leading cycling club. Riders: Judy Hurlbut (Ride Leader), John Renard (sweep), Tammy Diehm, Jeff DeLong, Pearl DeLong, Carol Bowers, Joe Knepper, J.T. Catlett, Dottie Sheehy, Carol Weisser, Ray Landis, John Gantz, Celeste Neuhard, John Peregoy, Harry Campbell, Harold Fulmer, John Rohrkemper, Bob Camp, Beth Hendricks, Steve Schmohl, and John Mullineaux.

Amish Ice Cream Ride 2 Aug 18
A change in ride leaders didn't fool anyone. There's just no mistaking Andrew for Gary. Thanks to Gary for helping me out of a scheduling pinch. It was a great evening for ice cream. Lapp's new store is very nice. Their ice cream is still among the very best Lancaster County has to offer. No unusual events. Riders: Andrew Mead (Ride Leader), John McKelvey (sweep), Jan Birch, Gary Musser, Pat Kruse, Carol Young, Dana Mead, Brooke Mead, and Savannah Mead.

Muddy Creek Ride Aug 21
I guess the forecast for rain kept most of the people away. We did get a little rain about 5 miles from the finish. The real rain came after I was home. Riders: Arthur Leid (Ride Leader) and Tim Good.

Down on the Farm Aug 21
16 riders showed for the Down on the Farm ride. It was raining one hour before the state of the ride and looked like the sun would come out to stay. We made it 16 miles before the rain stated again. The group voted to call it a day. Rain stopped as we rode to the finish. Was a very nice ride, no flats, accidents or lost riders. Riders: Judy Flowers (Ride Leader), Judy & Alan Hurlbut (Sweeps), Harry Campbell, Don Lewis, Jim Payton, Barb Koppenhafer, Connie Simmons, Mark Engle, John Gantz, Marsha Chamberlain, Alta Nolt, Carol Weisser, Bob Camp, Tom Mellinger, and Steve Mentzer.

Bull Moose Ride (A) Aug 21 I
t rained overnight and a line of thin thunderstorms were approaching the morning of the ride. The ride's leader decided not to do the ride due to the forecast. Four brave riders took off and cut the ride short getting home right before the sky left loose. Riders: Kyle Awkerman (leader), Barry Lavender, Ken Stadden, Brian Sowatsky and Tony Donato.

Historic Lititz Aug 22
What a great day for a bike ride. Completely different from Saturday's ride when we just got back minutes before the clouds opened up. Today was perfect-low humidity, lots of sun and a slight breeze. You couldn't ask for a better day. Wish I could say the same about the riders that showed up. Only kidding. It was the usual B ride once we got rid of all the fast riders the rest of us enjoyed the ride. Of course there was some dissension in our ranks, people complaining about getting their money's worth, moaning and groaning about a hill or two, and when a 26 mile ride turned into a 28. Good grief! You would have thought someone was being tortured. There were also people grabbing control of the ride, which by the way is okay with me. I prefer to lead from the rear. John Gantz was there passing everyone on the hills. I sure wish he would act his age. Barb Koppenhafer's daughter was on our ride and she told us that her mom was skeptical about her doing the B ride. Well she did a great job even letting me know when I almost made a wrong turn. The riders that came back with her all signed her cue sheet to show her mom that she did finish the B ride. Riders: Ray Landis (Ride Leader), Steve Gerber, John Mullineaux, Tim Good, Steve Schmohl, Art Leid, Lou Hershey, Joe Paparo, Kim Lausch, Jeff DeLong, Dave Heck, Lou Gray, Rich Wagner, Gary Musser, John Gantz, Ellen Koppenhafer, Angela Galgon, Tammie Calabrese, Joe Knepper, and Gil Palmieri.

Back Run Ramble Aug 22
After suffering through 3 days of heat and high humidity, the same gods that blew Hurricane Charley away from the Covered Bridge MC created a fabulous day for the Back Run Ramble. The great day brought 28 fine riders to enjoy a wonderful day to be on a bike. Riders: Tom Mellinger (Ride Leader), Harry Campbell (sweep), Jim Payton, Ann Schleef, Jim Forster, Steve Snyder, Craig Shreiner, Odessa Shreiner, Cindy Snyder, Karen Drawbaugh, Greg deVitry, John Cardos, Dave Kessler, Randy Houck, Judy Flowers, David Flowers, Diana Rollin, Bob Long, Bob Cotton, Curtis Palmer, John Hinchey, Roger Sheaffer, Al Dieffenbach, William King, William Crawford, Rick Lehman and non-LBC members: Dan Sea and Stuart Stoltzfus.

Intercourse #5 Aug 22
Spectacular day, nice roads, 8 cyclists, 7 bikes, good ride. Riders: Tony LaRosa (Ride Leader), Pam Klingensmith (sweep), Pat Kruse, Carol Young, Gene Homan, Judy Homan, Beth Hendrix and Hanelle Willemin.

New Holland Dutch Ride Aug 22
Riders: Brian Mitchell (Ride Leader), Ken Lessans, Mark Buckwalter, Tim Ihrig, Cindy Davis, John Donati, Dave Burkholder, Mike Lentz, Scott Wagner, Ed Granger, Angela Swarm, Paul Swarm and Barry Lavender.

Artic Express Aug 25
The substitute ride leader Gary decided to switch the ride from the Artic Express to the Airport Road ride. This ride is shorter and less hilly. The only thing to report was one sagging bag. If you want to know what bag was sagging, you should have been there because I'm not telling. Riders: Gary Musser (Ride Leader), Brian Winn, John Cardos, Stacy Spivak, Carol Young, Pat Kruse, Rick Shoup, and Chris Longenecker.

Ride to New Holland Aug 28
Our group was presented with a perfect cycling day and made the most of an early morning start. The ride was uneventful until the midway point (when the rollers turned into small climbs), the heavy breathing began, and I jammed my chain at the foot of Briartown Rd. After the "unbinding", I took off after the pack, but could not catch the now freight train-like tempo being set by the leaders. It was rumored that Mark had a run-in with a van in New Holland. He remained upright on the bike with only a minor scrape on his leg. This split the group into three parts. All returned to the start within a few minutes of each other. Great ride for all! Riders: Barry Lavender, Brian Sowatsky, Dale Buckwalter, Marlin Hess, Paul Swarm, Mark Buckwalter, Ken Lessans, Brent Kametz, Scott Wagner, Ron Pfautz, and Andrew Mead (leader).

New Witness Tree Trek Aug 28
Warm, sunny made for a perfect morning to ride. All 30+ people would agree. Even Rick and Randy from Harrisburg thought their first LBC Ride was worth the trip. Church door was open; however, the cookie order was shorted. Riders: Harry Campbell (Ride Leader), Dave Flowers (sweep), Jim Payton, Anne Schleef, John Renard, Chip Schaeffer, John Mullineaux, Pearl DeLong, Candae Deen, William King, Kim Lausch, Steven Young, Alta Nolt, Diana Rollin, Dave Heck, Lisa Heck, Bob Brader, Judy Flowers, Cindy Snyder, Steve Snyder, Mary Stadden, John Rohrkemper, Tim Barley, Sr. , Chris Merchant, Tom Mellinger, Joe Knepper, Kay Knepper, and Greg deVitry, and non-LBC members Rick Lockie and Randy Shearer.

Manheim Auction Loop Aug 28
Nice day for a bike ride, hot and humid especially when you had to stop for traffic. Heat coming from the blacktop was brutal. Got to lead until the 5.82 mile mark then I started leading from the rear. Stopped at Sheetz in Mt. Joy and ran into the C ride. They began coming in just as we were getting ready to go. Made it back to Catholic High, most of the riders were gone. Lou Grey and I rode back from Sheetz together. I think he took pity on me and I looked like I was ridden hard and put away wet. Riders: Ray Landis (Ride Leader), Don Whitehead, John Hinchey, Roger Sheaffer, Dave Kessler, Jerry Bryant, Jeff DeLong, Tammie Calabrese, Gary Musser, Matt London, Paul Benham, Lou Gray, Michael Tshudy, Larry Keating, Tim Good, Craig Shreiner, Bill Ressler, and Ed Granger.

Ride to Jack's Bike Shop (D) Aug 28
Jack's Bike Shop is small but we learned that Jack has very many antique bicycles stored at another location. Jack gave us a mini-lecture on the history of the banana seat bikes with high-rise handlebars from the 1960's. Every kid wanted a Schwinn Krate and now they are hot collectibles by adults. Jack repairs and sells old and new bicycles. This is a beautiful ride and we especially enjoyed the quiet and scenic Fairview Road. There is Pepe's Pizza at Clay Road and Rt. 322 intersection which is a great stop for food and water, etc. but we did not stop there this time. Riders: Reuben Weaver (leader), Carol Young, Pat Kruse, Don Sweigart and Flo Good.

Tour de Middletown Aug 29
The group pulled out at 8:30 sharp but I didn't realize Andy forgot to put on his helmet and he and Harry turned around to retrieve it. The group was anxious to push the pace and averaged around 17 mph to Middletown. We passed Andy and Harry as we were leaving Fox's Market. A headwind on the way back coupled with the heat and humidity made for a painful return trip. The group fragmented and several people took wrong turns but everybody made it back in good time with the overall average 16 mph as advertised. Riders: Dirk Suereth (Ride Leader), Andy Charles and Harry Smith (sweep by default), John Donati, Cindy Davis, Diane Lausman, Mike Lutz, Emily McKeon, Jim Moss, Craig Shreiner, Tim Ihrig, and Paul Yatabe.

Butter Side Down Aug 29
Turning "Butter Side Up" around proved interesting-the hills and scenery are definitely different in reverse. A mechanical problem caused Pat to turn back, but the rest of the 22 riders enjoyed and finished this new route without incident. We welcomed Carolyn and Craig on this their first LBC ride. Thanks to John R. for sweeping and to Carol for doing the "Potty Sweep." Riders: Judy Hurlbut (Rider Leader), John Renard (sweep), Jeff DeLong, Pearl DeLong, Carolyn Sourbier, Pat Kruse, Carol Young, Jim Payton, John Rohrkemper, Gene Homan, Judy Homan, Janielle Willemin, Beth Hendrick, John Gantz, Harold Fulmer, Carol Weisser, Joe Auchey, Steve Snyder, Cindy Snyder, Pam Klingensmith, Tom Mellinger, Ed Mowery, Donna M. McEvoy, and Non-LBC member Craig Shaubach.

Safe Harbor Ride Aug 29
Hot and humid weather along with the hills kept the average pace to just over 18 mph. A broken rear derailleur cable kept Mike within sight most of the time, except when he dropped us on the steep climbs. Riders: Mark Buckwalter (Ride Leader), Tom Hunt, Angela Swarm, Paul Swarm, Ken Lessans, Mike Whitaker, Jon Lyons, and Barry Lavender.

Sundae at Caddy Shack Aug 29
2.5 miles into the ride we had to walk our bikes through road construction. We took a detour through the park in Neffsville to avoid Community Days at the airport. At the Caddy Shack we enjoyed refreshing shade and cool treats on a hot, humid afternoon. Jonas cruised by the rest stop and we didn't see him again. After the rest stop Harry noticed his computer was missing and turned around to look for it. John M. and Rick took a shortcut back. There was a small breakaway group and the remnants finished the ride together. Riders: Rachel Kreider (Ride Leader), Carl Kreider, Steve Gerber, Rick Shoup, Harry Campbell, Michael Hauck, Jonas Fisher, Celeste Neuhard, John Peregoy, John Gantz, Ed Fearnow, Bobbie Fearnow, Michael, Heidi, David and Jeremiah Hendrix, and John Mullineaux.

New Holland Dutch Aug 29
A great day for a bike ride, although better for some than others. Six miles into the ride, John Cardos showed us his Olympic style and did a one and one-half gainer off of his bike. Although he gets a 10 for effort and difficulty, his landing was poor and I gave him a 9.1 overall. At eleven miles, we found Chip waiting on us. He hadn't seen anyone in front of him or behind him in a while. At that point, Randy's tire went flat, giving us some more entertainment. With a group effort, we repaired the flat and proceeded on. The rest of the group was miles ahead. We started to backtrack. Within short order we found the rest of the group and proceeded to the Getty Mart in Intercourse. The rest of the ride was uneventful. Later that day John telephoned to say his collarbone was broken. Get well soon, John. Riders: Gary Musser (Rider Leader), John Cardos, Tammie Calabrese, Ray Landis, Randy Haluck, Chip Shaeffer, Greg deVitry, Damon Schloff, Curtis Palmer, Jim Forster, Roger Sheaffer, Joe Knepper, John Hinchey, Dave Kessler, Art Leid, Matt London, Lew Hershey, Don Whitehead, and Bill Rissel.
