LBC Rides from the Past - August 2005

Bull Moose Ride (A) Aug 6
Around 15 years so, Steve Engle and I made the Bull Moose Ride. This is the first time in 2 years, that I had ridden the ride. I forgot what a nice ride it is. The ride goes north through Lancaster County, through the center of Masonic Homes in Etown, into Dauphin County and Lebanon County. The ride goes up Pinch Hill in Mt. Gretna. The group rode together and waited for riders when needed. About 8 miles into the ride, we had a mishap on Eby Chiques Road where you go downhill over a bridge with a quick right. Ken Lessans needed a real wheel which his wife delivered. Everyone involved handled themselves with real class. We averaged 18.7 mph. Riders: Kyle Awkerman (leader), Marlin Hess, Ken Lessans, Mark Buckwalter, Rick Lehman, Scott Wagner, and non-LBC members John Davidson and Ben Eyer.

Northwest Century (B) Aug 6
A perfect day for a ride in the country. 9 riders showed up for this ride and none were disappointed with its scenery and challenging terrain. Our group split up 3 times due to wrong turns and a mistake on the cue sheet. One road even turned into a washed out stone road, but it was right on cue. This should be changed on the cue sheet, or course. However, we always found our way back together and we finished as a group at a 16.66 mph pace. Curtis Palmer (leader) Andrew Mead, Mike Lutz, Barry Lavender, Cindy Davis, Diane Lausman, Paul Smeltz, David Hooper and non-LBC rider Eric Blazer.

Back Run Ramble (C) Aug 6
Great weather with cooler temperatures in the lower 80's, overcast skies with sun peaking through. 31 riders showed for the Back Run Ramble that quickly broke into two groups and some were never spotted again. One flat tire, no spills, cookie treat provided by Harry Campbell and John Cardos made sure no lost riders. Thanks to all for a great ride. Riders: Judy Flowers (leader), John Cardos ( sweep), Marilyn & Barry Gelsinger, John Mullineaux, Ray Landis, Rich Wagner, Harry Campbell, David Flowers, Don Whitehead, John Gantz, Steve Schmohl, Tom Mellinger, Roger Sheaffer, Jim Wentz, John Renard, Mary Stadden, Carol Weisser, Dave Kessler, Kathy Brugh, Jake Myers, Bobbi & Ed Fearnow, Randy Haluck, Tim Barley, Sr., Lew Hershey, John Peregoy, Celeste Neuhard. Non- LBC members: Traceylyn Gardner, Stu & Kim Barden.

D Tour Thru the Country (D) Aug 6
What a beautiful day to ride. Hot, humid weather gone at least one day. No problems, spills, etc. Four non-LBC riders with 2 being first timers. Welcome Leslie, Amy, John and Stephanie. Hope to see you again. Riders: Jim Payton (leader), Dottie Sheehy (sweep), Phil Wright, Steve Holland, Judy Hurlbut, Alan Hurlbut, Cindy Snyder, Karen Drawbaugh, Xenia Muniz, Bill Crawford, Jim White, Alta Nolt, Helen Weber, Joan Rohrkemper, Pam Tronsor, Irene Camp, Elca Swigart, John McKelvey, and non-LBC members Leslie Haschak, Amy Sahm, John Heymann, and Stephanie Jaczynski.

Zinn's Diner Ride (A) Aug 7
It was raining at the start of the ride, so the turnout was small, and since both the A and B groups were departing from the Quality Inn but on differently scheduled rides, we decided to band together and do the just the A-ride, Zinn's Diner (which is actually the Park Place Diner now). The rain tapered off eventually, but the roads were slop pretty much the whole ride. The slop soon transferred to bike and rider, but when you're wet and dirty, you're wet and dirty, and on the bright side, the heat was absent for much of the ride. The group stayed together the first several miles, even after climbing Ridge Road at Ephrata. After passing the diner, the lead group found their energy reserves and rode ahead, finishing with an 18 mph average pace. Fortunately, no one spilled on the wet roads, and we had only one flat to repair along the way. This ride has a nice variety of terrain, scenic countryside, and a lot of roads with sparse traffic. I'll schedule it on a better-weather day next time. Riders: Tim Ihrig (leader), Matt London, Joe Robinson, Barry Lavender, Curtis Palmer, Mike Lutz, Scott Wagner, Ken Lessans, Mark Buckwalter, and non-LBC member Jessica Marcini.
