LBC Rides from the Past - Winter 2006
Another D-lightful Ride (Casual) Dec. 3
Brrr....winter's not here for another 12 days. These hearty cyclists
pedalled in today's "autumn" air with brisk winds and temperatures at 21
degrees at the start and 31 degrees at the finish. Fingers, toes and some noses
were well insulated. Our hearts were warmed with all the laughter, stories and
jokes (something about a wild, baby eagle flying around Lew Hershey's house).
Thanks to all who showed up today enabling me to lead my 10th ride in 2005.
Riders: Judy Hurlbut (leader), Alan Hurlbut, Lou Gray, John Mullineaux, John
Renard, Harry Campbell, John Gantz, Jim Drumm, Carl Kreider, Tim Good, John
Rohrkemper, Lew Hershey, and Heidi Hendrix.
Goat & Bull Ride (Casual) Dec 3 Nice afternoon
ride, but very cold and windy. Everybody stayed together. Thanks for coming out
on a cold afternoon-made the hot chocolate taste better. Riders: Alta Nolt
(leader), Jim Drumm, Jim Payton, Karen Drawbaugh, Anne Schleef, Phil Wright,
Linda Wright, Flo Good, and Marilyn Gelsinger.
Ride to Manheim (Long) (Casual) Dec 4 Ice & snow
canceled the ride. My car would not even go on the ice. Judy Flowers
(leader)
D-tour Through the Country (Casual) Dec 11 Ride
cancelled. Snow on roads. Riders: Steve Holland (leader)
Butter Side Up (Casual) Dec 17 When the real leader
wussed out (allegedly because of some family obligation), your humble scribe
took over as unofficial leader on the road. As might be expected, the fast guys
took off. Surprisingly they were still reasonably close at 6 miles. Not
surprisingly, at that point, they turned right instead of left. I call out,
sotto voce, "left turn!" but they did not hear me. I was about to raise
my voice to get their attention when I remembered the immortal words of the
late Jack Chandler, "Let 'em go, they're making good time." Our small group of
four continued on the correct course unencumbered by any pressure to keep up
with the others. The day was so pleasant we decided to add a 4 mile loop in the
middle just to extend the ride a bit. Riders: John Renard (leader), John
Mullineaux (sub leader), John Gantz, Tim good, Matt London, Randy Haluck,
Eileen Crone, Brian Heiland and Heidi Hendrix.
East Pete Treat (Casual) Dec 17 The ride was dedicated
to Phil Wright's new "heart helper"-good luck Phil. We did it in 38 degree temp
but would have enjoyed your presence to warm the riders with your wit. Riders:
Harry Campbell (sub leader), John Gantz (sweep), Dave Kessler, Judy Hurlbut,
Alan Hurlbut, Greg Mayfield, and Damon Schlott.
Down on the Farm (Casual) Dec 18 It was officially the
last weekend of autumn; but, it felt pretty wintry with temperatures right
around the freezing mark. That normally wouldn't daunt this group but an ice
storm a few days before had left the roads iffy. Wary of black ice, we
nevertheless had a fine ride beneath the sunny sky. Only at the end, when Harry
detoured us down a shady street with plenty of ice and snow did we face any
real peril; but, we all emerged unscathed and singing out greetings of the
season-Yo, Saturnalia! Riders: John Rohrkemper (leader), Harry Campbell, Brian
Heiland, Lou Gray and John Gantz.
Not D-Manding Ride (Casual) Dec 24 What a beautiful
Christmas Eve Day--high of about 50 degrees. Started off together but soon
Sylvia and her group were off and gone. Riders: Jim Payton (leader), Eric
Evans, Pam Klingensmith, Jim White, Greg Mayfield, Sylvia Newcomer, Brian
Heiland, Randy Haluck, John Gantz, John Cardos, Harry Campbell, Scott Jones,
Tom Mellinger, Judy Flowers, Carl Kreider, Rachel Kreider, John Furry, David
Flowers, Bill Ressel, John Rohrkemper, John Renard, John Mullineaux, Carl
Weisser, Dave Kessler, Heidi Hendrix, Diane Lausman, John Donati, Craig
Shreiner, and Lew Hershey.
Chimney Corner Breakfast (Casual) Dec 31 Finished just
ahead of a rainy showy winter day. The end of another wonderful year of run,
riding and friendship all of which are part of belonging to LBC. Happy New Year
to all. Riders: Jim Payton (leader), Karen Drawbaugh, Anne Schleef, Jim Drumm,
Harry Campbell, Tom Mellinger, Lou Gray, John Gantz, Steve Holland, Brian
Holland, and Dave Kessler.
Ride to Manheim Long (Casual) Jan 7 Very beautiful day
but only 26 degrees. A good ride to start off 2006. Riders: Jim Payton
(leader), Bryan Heiland, Harry Campbell, John Renard, Lou Gray, Lou Hershey,
Tom Mellinger, John Gantz, John Mullineaux, Bill Ambler, Craig Shreiner, Randy
Haluck, Dave Kessler, Jeff DeLong, Pearl DeLong, Heidi Hendrix, and non-LBC
member Bart Torre.
Buena Vista Short (Casual) Jan 7 Riders: Don Whitehead
(leader but did not ride), Craig Shreiner, Lew Hershey, John Gantz, Lou Gray
Chickies Creek Long (Casual) Jan 8 The temperature was
comfortable in the 40's for the 10:00 casual ride with the sun trying to break
through on us. No wind, flat, spills. We started together and then broke into
two groups. We had non-member Andy ? join us on Landisville Road and ride with
us until Main Street in Landisville. I told him about the club and hope he will
join us again sometime. Riders: Judy Flowers (leader), Carol Weisser (sweep),
Brian Heiland, Craig Shreiner, John Gantz, Harry Campbell, Tim Good, Steve
Mazeski, Jim Drumm, Tom Mellinger, Matt London, Lou Gray, Jeff DeLong, Pearl
DeLong, Eric Evans, and Dave Kessler. Great Group!
East Pete Treat (Casual) Jan 8 The day was actually
fairly warm and we all started out together except John D. and Diane. They
decided to leave early. With only about two miles in, we missed a turn and then
another and then another. So, I started off this New Year in grand fashion. But
we all finished together and we made it back the same day. Riders: John Renard
(leader), John Gantz, Chip Jordan, John Donati, Steve Holland, John Cardos,
Diane Lausman, Randy Haluck, John Peregoy, Carl Kreider, Brian Heiland, Sylvia
Newcomer, Mary Stadden, Bill Ressel, and Jim Drumm.
Nissley Vineyard Ride (Casual) Jan 15 Very windy!! I
guess a cold ride on a windy day couldn't compete with the Steeler's playoff
game! Only 3 riders. Riders: Steve Holland (leader), Curtis Palmer, and Damon
Schlott. Down on the Farm (Casual) Jan 21 For a "winter time" ride, the number
in attendance was rewarding. The leader missed a few turns; however, we all
made it back. Thanks John Cardos and Jim Drumm. Welcome back Phil! Riders:
Harry Campbell (leader), Jim Drumm (sweep), Tony LaRosa, Phil Wright, Linda
Wright, Scott Jones, Clay Jones, Jim Drumm, John Mullineaux, John Renard, Randy
Haluck, John Gantz, Brian Heiland, Gary Musser, Craig Shreiner, Brian Mitchell,
Lew Hershey, John Cardos, Esther Gutacker, Connie Simmons, Marcy Diem, Sylvia
Newcomer, and non-LBC members Linda Holzhausen, Coleen Recker, Ros Ambrose, and
Mike Ross.

Historic Lititz (Casual) Jan 22 Beautiful day for a
ride. Sunny and cool. Unexpected large group. Started the ride with 25
riders---ended with 3. Many announced intentions to cut the ride short and head
for home, others discovered shortcuts and a brave few followed the cue. Typical
off-season, casual ride---pick your group and go!! Riders: Karen Drawbaugh
(leader), Jim Payton, Phil Wright, Linda Wright, Greg Mayfield, Ray Landis,
Steve Holland, Judy Flowers, Gary Musser, Rich Wagner, Randy Haluck, Dwight
Bowen, John Renard, Craig Shreiner, Tom Mellinger, John Mullineaux, Brian
Heiland, Lou Hershey, John Gantz, Harry Campbell, Kathy Brugh, Mary Stadden,
Andy Smith, Bill Ressel, John Peregoy.
Butter Side Up (Casual) Jan 29 Rained out. No ride.
Riders: Steve Holland (leader)
Ride to Manheim - Long (Casual) Feb 4 Rain, wind, cold,
locust, plague, pestilence, Jim Payton, and Phil Wright-all good reasons to
cancel today's ride. Riders: John Renard (leader).
Airport Ride (Casual) Feb 5 A big crowd of 20+ braved a
30 m.p.h. wind to pedal some 14 enjoyable miles of riding. Riders: Jim Payton
(leader), Phil Wright, Linda Wright, Ray Landis, Harry Campbell, Brian Heiland,
Steve Holland, Greg Mayfield, Judy Flowers, Carl Kreider, Bob Brader, Esther
Gutacker, Bill Ressel, Tom Mellinger, John Gantz, Lou Gray, John Renard, Kathy
Brugh, Lew Hershey Dave Kessler, and non-LBC member Linda Holzhausen.
East Pete Treat (Casual) Feb 11 Good, short winter run.
We had an extended ride at about 4 miles longer with stop at Stauffer's of
Kissel Hill. At that point everyone did their own thing. Most everyone ended
back at the starting points just not at the same time. Riders: Phil Wright
(leader), Linda Wright (sweep), Harry Campbell, John Gantz, John Mullineaux,
Craig Shreiner, Lou Gray, Mary Stadden, Judy Flowers, Dave Kessler, Randy
Haluck, John Peregoy.
Not D-Manding (Casual) Feb 18 Cold day-good thing it
was "not D-Manding Ride." All riders are ready for warmer spring weather.
Riders: Phil Wright (leader), Linda Wright (sweep), Alta Nolt, Harry Campbell,
John Gantz, John Renard, John Mullineaux, Dave Kessler, Lew Hershey, Craig
Shreiner, and non-LBC member Bart Torre.
Butter Side Up
(Casual) Feb 25 Seventeen riders had
a great afternoon for a bike ride in late February. It was 50° with
light wind and bright sunshine almost as nice as in California where Lancaster
Countys own Floyd Landis is leading the Tour of California.
Riders: Tom Mellinger (leader), Tim Good, Ray Landis, Scott Jones, Jim
Drumm, Jim Kulp, Brian Heiland, Randy Haluck, Judy Hurlbut, Curtis Palmer, Bill
Ressel, Craig Shreiner, John Gantz, Harry Campbell, Lew Hershey, and non-LBC
member Julian Weber.
Landisville
(Casual) Feb 26 23°,
wind, some sun! Great coming back to East Pete. Winter riding can
be invigorating! Riders: Jim Payton (leader), Jim Drumm (sweep),
Harry Campbell, Dave Kessler, John Gantz, Carl Kreider, Craig Shreiner, Randy
Haluck, and Lew Hershey.
Cains Quest (A) Mar
4 Rolling Terrain. We all knew it
was going to happen. There was just no avoiding it. The nice 15-20
mph that pushed us along as we headed east turned into a brutal 20-25 mph
headwind for the 20 mile return. At least it kept our pace in
check. We finished together at 15.5 and even stopped a couple times to
re-group. Damon missed the start and drove out to Sadisbury to meet
us. All wished he had come to motor-pace us into the wind.
Riders: Andrew Mead (leader), Scott Wagner, Kyle Awkerman, Mark
Buckwalter, Tim Norejko, Jerre Hockenbrocht, Brian Sowatsky, and Damon
Schlott.
Another D-Lightful Ride (Casual) Mar 4 This ride did
not start on a very good note. First I went to the wrong start location, and
then I forgot the cue sheets. John M. forgot one bootie and had to go back home
for another pair. One rider forgot his helmet. The wind was so bad that Jim
couldn't take any more and turned around early and Harry got a call and had to
drop back for a while. The wind made the ride feel twice as long and very cold
but we all made it back without any major problems. Let's hope the season gets
better!! Riders: John Renard (leader), Tim Good, John Mullineaux, Jim Payton,
John Gantz, Harry Campbell, Lou Gray, Scott Jones, Jim Drumm, and Bob Brader.
CVHS-Churchtown (A) Mar
5 Seven riders began this ride on a cool
and very windy March morning. As usual we had a tailwind the first 20
miles or so of this 40 mile ride, but when we turned to head back it was mostly
in our faces. There were a couple of real strong riders in the group and
they did more than their share of pulls at the front making life a little
easier for the rest of us. Late in the ride the group began to splinter a
bit, but 5 of us finished together with the rest coming in a few minutes
later. Riders: Curtis Palmer (leader), Damon Schlott, Neil Fickes,
Barry Lavender, Mark Buckwalter, Dale Burkholder and Scott Wagner.
Three Lakes Loop (A) Mar 11 Spring has sprung and the
riders have come out in full force. When you have weather like today (temps. in
the 50's and no wind) you know you will probably have a pretty big show up. Big
show indeed, 21 riders showed up for this ride. We started out of town, heading
north toward Clay. The group pretty much stayed together for about 16 miles. As
the faster riders started turning up the heat, us slower riders started
dropping off. At about the 17 mile mark Scott Wagner broke his left crank arm.
Brian Mitchell and I stopped to make sure he was alright and that he had a cell
phone to contact someone to give him a ride home. Now with the group long gone
I decided that we take a short cut to catch us back up. The short cut worked
out perfect. But it wasn't long before they started pulling away from us again.
As far as I know the rest of the ride went without incident. The leader
finished some where near the rear at a 17.4 pace. I was informed that the
speedsters finished with 18.7. Riders: Damon Schlott ( leader), Ed Fearnow,
Brian Mitchell, Mark Buckwalter, Jerre Hockenbrocht, Tom Hunt, Tim Norejko,
Brian Sowatsky, Craig Shreiner, Michael Hendrix, Scott Wagner, Carl
Laws-Landis, Dave Simons, Ken Lessons, Neil Fickes, Eileen Crone, Dale
Burkholder, Kyle Awkerman. And non-LBC members) Ron Herr, Bart J. Tore, Bart G.
Tore, George Mathis (?) and Billy Weisser.
Kreider's Ice Cream Ride (Casual) Mar 11 A beautiful,
warm winter ride for those members who were not manning the booth at the
Carlisle Bike Show. Lots of riders at the beginning but had a mutiny at Kreider
Dairy Restaurant. More than half the riders extended the ride because of the
great weather. Amy Mitchell took a group photo before the mutiny. Leader, sweep
and 7 others followed route and arrived at start together and eager for more
great weather rides. Riders: Linda Wright (leader), Michael Riggi (sweep), Phil
Wright, Jim Payton, Ray Landis, Scott Jones, Greg Mayfield, Harry Campbell, Amy
Mitchell, Candae Deen, Rachel Kreider, Jim Drumm, Dave Kessler, Jeff DeLong,
Pearl DeLong, John Rohrkemper, Kevin Lunz, Rich Wagner, Andy Charles, John
Gantz, Jake Myers, Jim White, John Peregoy, and Carol Weisser.
Airport Ride (Casual) Mar 12 The weather was poor but
these adventurous souls decided to ride without the leader who handed out the
cue sheets and went home. Unfortunately, the weatherman was correct and his 90%
chance of rain came true. Riders: John Furry (leader), Jim Payton, Phil Wright,
Linda Wright, Dave Kessler, Brian Heiland, and Scott Jones.
Manheim Mount Pleasant (A) Mar 12 Rained out. Riders:
Curtis Palmer (leader)
Down on the Farm (Casual) Mar 18 Not too cold but very
windy. Sure wish spring would get here soon. Riders: Jim Payton (leader), Ray
Landis, Phil Wright, Linda Wright, Steve Holland, Greg Mayfield, Harry
Campbell, Judy Flowers, John Mullineaux, John Renard, Rich Wagner, Tom
Mellinger, Dave Kessler, Bill Ressel, Craig Shreiner, G. H, (?) and Brian
Heiland.
Central Manor (A) Mar 18 It was probably colder and
windier than Paris Robaix on a bad day, and everyone thought they were Tom
Boonen. Despite being hardened to the cold everyone agreed it would be best to
ride out into the wind and have a gentle tail wind coming home. Well, we got
half of it correct. There must have been a weather change at the halfway point
because it felt like it was into the wind and uphill both ways. Tornado
training anyone? We elected to do a roundtrip over Pinch Road heading north
instead of riding out into the Manor hinterlands but it didn't seem to make
much of a difference. We still managed to finish together at about 17+ mph.
Strong work by the pacesetters helped to keep (formerly) lightweight hill
climbers (me) out of the gutter. Riders: Ken Lessans (leader), Brian Sowatsky,
Marlin Hess, Scott Wagner, Jerre Hockenbrocht, Tim Norejko, Carl Laws-Landis,
and Mark Buckwalter.
Throttles & Bottles (A) Mar 19 A host of fast
riders, 20 mph winds, and a deceptively tough course all added up to a brutal
early season ride. The group mostly stayed together for about 2/3 of the ride.
Around Smithville Road the casualties started mounting. Only Dale Burkholder,
Mike Whitaker, and Marty KcKeon were left by ride's end, averaging 18.7 mph.
The rest of us limped home between 16.5 and 17.5 mph. If it doesn't kill you it
will make you stronger, right? Riders: Scott Wagner (leader), Curtis Palmer,
Mark Buckwalter, Neil Fickes, Marty McKeon, Dale Burkholder, Tom Hunt, Barry
Lavender, Ken Lessans, Damon Schlott, and Mike Whitaker.
Chimney Corner Ride (Casual) Mar 19 Cold and windy
conditions broke us up into two groups. Half went ahead and finished the ride,
half of us were tired of fighting the wind and cut the ride short. Thanks March
for coming out to support my first ride lead. Riders: Greg Mayfield (leader),
Jim Payton, Phil Wright, Linda Wright, Ray Landis, John Renard, Scott Jones,
Steve Mazeski, Gary Musser, Rich Wagner, Craig Shreiner, Steve Young, Brian
Heiland, and Marcy Diem.
Tour of the Amish Country (A) Mar 25 We saw Amish in
the fields. We waited for Amish cows to cross the road and a tour bus motor
paced us to the Amish Bake Shop on Gibbons Road. Michelle got nearly 50% of her
training time for the day and the predicted rain and snow showers did not
materialize. So, it was all good. Riders: Marlin Hess (leader), Brian Sowatsky,
Scott Wagner, and Michele Bate.
Airport Ride (Casual) Mar 25 16 riders with cycling
skills covering D, C, B levels of the LBC ride classifications were looking for
a social, spring ride and found it today with sunshine and no wind. All rode
together exchanging lots of jovial chatter to the Lancaster Airport. From here
2 headed back following the cue sheet. At the leader's suggestion 14 opted for
a longer ride. 7 of this group decided on a longer ride yet and headed farther
north. The 7 remaining with the leader found a quite unnecessary ADVENTURE. We
were pedalling along Creek Road when a car driven by someone obviously with a
hatred for bicyclists came at us from the opposite side of the road. This car
crossed the double yellow lines onto our lane. All this time the man was
yelling obscenities out the window. Just feet from the front rider, the car
swerved back to its lane and passed the group. Although startled, none fell.
This wasn't enough because the car turned around and proceeded to come at us
from behind. All 7 riders headed for the ditch. As he passed us still yelling,
we got a license # and Craig promptly called the police. 2 cruisers with
gracious officers met us and took our report. We hope that justice will be
served. And may future club ride be less adventuresome! Welcome to 4 new
riders--Julie, Ed, Christine, Kate. Riders: Judy Hurlbut (leader) , John
McKelvey (1st ½ sweep), Christine Brubaker (short sweep), John
Mullineaux, John Renard, Julie Tullio, Ed DiPilla, Harry Campbell, John Gantz,
Kate Leventry, Jeff & Pearl DeLong, Tom Mellinger, Randy Haluck, Dave
Kessler, Craig Shreiner.
Triple Play (A) Mar 26 It was a windy spring day.
Triple Play is a true spring classic with 3 short climbs around Rothsville.
Riders: Kyle Awkerman (leader), Mike Lutz, Scott Wagner, Damon Schlott, Tom
Hunt, B. Lavender, Mark Buckwalter, and Ken Stadden.
Ride to Manheim Long (Casual) Mar 26 The wind blew and
the bikes flew-at least going East. Great group of A,B,C,D's and a few E's
enjoyed the ride. Riders: Harry Campbell (leader), John Mullineaux, Alan
Hurlbut, Judy Hurlbut, Jim Payton, Ray Landis, John Renard, Kim Lausch, John
Gantz, Judy Flowers, Jim Drumm, Jeff DeLong, Pearl DeLong, Randy Haluck, Steve
Mazeski, Bill Ressel, Scott Jones and Craig Shreiner. |
