LBC Rides from the Past - July 2004
Impromptu July 3 A very nice day by typical Lancaster
Co. July standards-not too warm, with a gentle NE wind to cool things off. We
made our way first to the south, looping below Lampeter and Strasburg almost to
New Providence, then heading northeast to Leaman Place and Intercourse before
returning through Gordonville and Bird-in-Hand. We ended with 57.7 miles at
11.9 mph, within hailing distance of the scheduled 50 miles at 12 mph. Talk
about truth in advertising! Unlike my last impromptu which featured al
altercation with a groundhog, this ride was incident-free. Since this was an
impromptu, we all stayed together the whole ride-we had to, because nobody knew
the route in advance, including the leader. The club should have more
impromptus, to promote sociability. Riders: Bill Hoffman (leader), Dave
Kessler, Tim Bood, John Gantz, and Bob Long.
Ride to Jack's Bike Shop July 3 We visited Jack's Bike
Shop and saw his antique bikes. It's amazing that Jack has been selling and
repairing bikes in the Hopeland area for over 40 years. The club missed a good
ride. I will try this again in August. Riders: Reuben Weaver (leader); Carl
Kreider
Bigger Lititz Loop July 3 The ride began at 7:00 a.m.
on the holiday weekend. Bill grumbled about the early hour but managed to be at
the start 5 minutes early. All agreed the cooler temps and non-existent wind
were worth getting up early for. Bill flatted on the way into Lititz which
split the group. Thanks Mike for hanging back with Bill. The rest of made it
back to CV without incident. Oddly, none of our breakfast club joined the
forming A ride at 9:00. It looked to be a pretty fast ride. Riders: Andrew Mead
(leader), Mike Lutz, Jeff DeLong, Dale Buckwalter, Dave Shenk, Bill Ressel,
David Y. Hooper.
CVHS-NH-Airport July 3 On my first A ride lead, 5 of us
managed to an 18.7 mph pace, which was pretty close to the advertised pace. The
rest of the group rode a faster pace. Rumor has it that the fastest pace was
21.2 mph. Riders: Brian Mitchell (leader), Brian Sowatsky, Mark Buckwalter,
Andy Charles, Tom Rauba, Paul & Angela Swarm, Ron Pfautz, Tom Hunt, Craig
Shreiner, Barry Lavender, Dale Burkholder, Dirk Suereth, Ed Fearnow, Ken
Lessans and Marlin Hess.
Rapturous Ride July 3 Wow, what a nice group. What a
nice ride. So many people and no incidences. Group stayed together and obeyed
all large group etiquette. Welcomes quite a few new people-hope to see them
again. Thanks to Harry and Doug for patiently bringing up the end. Riders:
Karen Drawbaugh (leader), Harry Campbell & Doug Stark (sweeps), Jim Payton,
Ray Landis, Tony Larosa, Dottie Sheehey, Jonas Fisher, Pat Kruse, Pam

Warrior's Revenge July 4 Skies looked threatening so we
decided to take a shorter ride. We felt a few rain drops as we finished the
ride. Riders: Rachel Kreider (leader), Carl Kreider and Andy Smith.
Ride to Manheim Long July 4 Great group-The walk was
the highlight of the ride-Covered Bridges should be appreciated slowly! Riders:
Harry Campbell (leader), Jim Payton, Karen Drawbaugh, Jonas Fisker, Lew
Hershey, Gary Franke, Joe Knepper, John Gantz, John Peregoy, Celeste Neuhard,
Dave Kessler, Tom Mellinger, John Furrey, Gary Massen, and Floyd Stack..
Flatlanders 4th of July Favorite July 4 Good turnout
for this 4th of July ride into York. The group flew over the Wrightsville
Bridge at over 26 mph. Riders finished with 19.4 average. Riders: Paul &
Angela Swarm (leaders), Jan Felice, Tom Hunt, Mark Buckwalter, Paul Yatabe,

Coleman Ice Cream Ride July 7 Thunderstorms. Ice cream.
Bicycles. They just don't go well together. Everyone played it safe and stayed
inside, including the leader. We went to Coleman's later in the evening for an
ice cream. As always, well worth the trip, even if not on a bike. Riders:
Andrew Mead (leader).
Coleman Ice Cream Ride July 7 Thunderstorms. Bicycles.
Ice cream. These simply don't go well together. Coleman's has good ice cream,
but not so good that a bike ride in such weather was worthwhile. So, the leader
and his team waited a while and then drove over for an ice cream dessert after
the storm passed. Andrew Mead, (rained out leader).
Progressive Breakfast July 10 Perfect weather, three
stops with delicious food and many friends to ride with-one grand morning! As
we rode by Millport Conservancy a deer jumped the fence and crossed the road
ahead of us. Riders: Rachel Kreider (leader), Harry Campbell (sweep), Judy
Flowers, Carl Kreider, Pearl DeLong, Jeff DeLong, Joe Knepper, Richard Sulkes,
Don Flowers, John Peregoy, Celeste Neuhard, Ray Landis, John Gantz, Tim Good,
Tom Mellinger, Eleanor Nuffort, Dick Nuffort, Marilyn Gelsinger, John Renard,
Mary Stadden, Gary Musser, Lew Hershey, Kathy Brugh, Myra Carter, John
Mullineaux, and Irene Camp.
Quarryville ½ Century July 10 On the 11% climb
at Vintage Road a stinging attack flicked the topographically challenged leader
off the back faster than Phil Liggett can say, "Mario Cipollini is in a bit of
bother." He managed to get back into the five-rider sweep group with help from
Brian and Glen. According to unofficial timekeepers, the peleton finished at
19.7 mph, and the Lanterne Rouge group rolled in 7 minutes later at 18.6 mph.
Riders: Marlin Hess (ride leader), Dale Burkholder, John Glick, Glenn Bastian,
Mark Buckwalter, Ed Fearnow, Jerre Hockenbrocht, Barry Lavender, Brian
Sowatsky, Ron Pfautz, Tom Hunt, Kenn Lessans, Tom McPhillips, and non-LBC
members: Bart Torre, Matt Heiser.
Progressive Brunch D Pace July 10 Just a slight chill
in the air at 7:00 am as we left for stop # 1, the Stark's. The C/B group got
there just before us, but from there on we were first at the food stops. As we
progressed, the weather improved and was absolutely delightful by the time we
reached our last stop at the Hurlbut's. The food at each stop was excellent,
thanks to the hard work of Peg Stark, Verna Moseman and Judy Hurlbut. Riders:
Alan Hurlbut, (leader), Andrew Mead (sweep), Judy Hurlbut, Carol Young, Gail
& Steve Brainard, Sue Bowman, John Renard, Janielle Willemin, Dana, Brooke
& Savannah Mead, Bill Hoffman, Chip Shaeffer, Dottie Sheehy, Bob Camp Alta
Nolt and Michael Riggi.
Cains Quest July 11 Leading my first B ride today, it
occurred to me that "Everything I Need to Know about Cycling I Learned from the
B Group" (with apologies to Robert Fulghum): 1. Share everything. This includes
tubes, water bottles, tools, power bars, spare gloves, sunscreen, socks and cue
sheets. 2. Play fair. If someone in the group flats, always stop and wait for
him/her and offer to help. Unless it's John Mullineaux, who got a flat very
early in the ride and declined assistance - he designed most of the club rides
so he always knows the best shortcut to catch up (or to avoid big hills). 3.
Don't hit people. Or wildlife, family pets, road debris, pot holes, Amish
buggies, motorized vehicles or other cyclists (this one's for me). 4. Don't
take things that aren't yours. (Exception: see #1) 5. Say you're sorry when you
hurt somebody. It's especially important to apologize just after you've pointed
out an interesting alternate route and half the group interprets it as a left
turn signal and goes that way as you continue straight ahead, alone. (Sorry,
guys!) 6. Wash your hands before you eat. Snacks taste better without the bike
lube. 7. Flush. Choose your cornfields carefully - watch out for hidden corn
mazes. 8. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. But having your favorite
cold beverage after the ride is better! 9. Live a balanced life. This is
especially important when traveling on two wheels at a speed faster than the
advertised pace. 10. Learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and
dance and play and work every day some. Nah - forget all that and just cycle
every day some. 11. Take a nap every afternoon. Unless there's another club
ride starting at 1:00. 12. When you go out into the world, watch for traffic,
use hand signals and stick together. This is the road rule for the peloton,
which on today's ride quickly accelerated far ahead of the leader and included
Andy Charles, Mark Fuhrer, Bob Walker, Rich Wagner, Emily McKeon, Rick
Reisinger, Tom Moyer, John Donati, Bill Ressler, Diane Lausman, and Tony
DeNunzio. 13. Be aware of wonder. And weather. Most important, wonder about the
weather, which turned out to be great today. 14. Always keep the pace, even if
you have to lead from the rear. Special thanks to those who stayed behind to
keep the leader (Candae Deen) company: Jim Forster, Steve Gerber, Lou Gray,
Jeff DeLong, Tammie Calabrese, and intermittently, Cindy Davis, who seemed to
have defected from the A ride and twice lapped us from behind (how does she do
that??). 15. Always finish what you start. After leaving John M. behind to fix
his flat, we didn't see him for the rest of the ride and assumed he had taken
one of his infamous shortcuts and had long since beat us back to the parking
lot. While we were packing up our gear at CVHS, a lone rider appeared on
Horseshoe Road: John Mullineaux! (Did he finally get lost, or had he taken
world's longest short cut? Only John knows for sure)
Cain's Quest July 11 Riders: Candae Deen (leader), Jim
Forster, Steve Gerber, Mark Fulmer, Andy Charles, John Mullineau, Lou Gray,
Jeff DeLong, Bob Walker, Rich Wagner, Emily McKeon, Rick Reisinger, Tom Moyer,
John Donati, Tammie Calabrese, Bill Ressel, Diane Lausman, and Tony DeNunzio.
Cain's Quest July 11 Great turnout! The majority of the
group finished together with a 20.9mph average. Riders: Paul & Angela Swarm
(Ride Leaders), Cindy Davis, Ed Granger, John Donati, Tom Hunt, Andy Null,
Barry Lavender, Dirk Suereth, Bob Turner, Mark Buckwalter, Scott Wagner, Ken
Lessans, Andy Charles, Tim Ihrig, Rick Lehman, Jude Sharp, Rick Reisinger
Ride to New Holland July 11 Had a pretty good turn out
for this ride, did not have any mishaps or falls. We got started on time and
headed for New Holland. Once we got to New Holland several people wanted to see
the car show including me, the others went on. The car show had street rods as
well as antique autos. I don't know what went on with the riders that went on
but the group I was in after the car show had a leisure ride back. I don't
know if everyone had noticed but once again there are several new bikes showing
up. Dave Kessler and his new 5500 Trek (the ground hog seeker), Pearl DeLong
and her new Raleigh, and Key Knepper with her new Trek. I would like to thank
the Stark's, Moseman's and the Hurlbut's for the food and hospitality during
the Progressive Brakfast ride on Saturday, July 10. The pictures on the website
show that everyone seemed to have a good time. Riders: Ray Landis (leader), Lew
Hershey, Dave Kessler, Richard Sulkes, Nancy Youst, Joe Paparo, Carl Kreider,
Joe Knepper, Gary Musser, Celeste Neuhard, John Peregoy, John Gantz, Reuben
Weaver, Kim Laush, William King, William Crawford, Tom Mellinger, Gregy
deVitry, Bob Davis, and Kay Knepper.
Fifteen Mile Ride July 11 Riders: Dottie Sheehy
(Leader), Sylvia Newcomer (sweep), Mark Engle, Lisa Heck, Harry Campbell,
Harold Fulmer, Rob Wolfe, Matt Wolfe, Beth Hendrix, Sue Bowman, Pam
Klingensmith, and non-LBC member Carol Bowers.
East Pete to the Airport July 14 Why would 3.5 inches
of rain stop an ice cream ride? The rain won! Riders: Harry Campbell (leader)
Ride to Schaefferstown July 17 Beautiful day for a bike
ride. Our early start kept us ahead of most of the traffic. The group started
with four riders. Andy showed up just after we left. He caught us at Pumping
Station Road and capture the polka dot jersey. Craig showed up sometime after
Andy but still managed to catch us by the end. Great ride. Riders: Andrew Mead
(leader), Denny White, Cindy Davis, Ken Stadden, Kyle Awkerman, Andy Axmacher,
and Craig Shreiner
Suburban Urban Assault July 17 The ride leader was
feeling pretty good until the hills of Lancaster County Park when my legs just
went away. The old "bonk." I stumbled home and picked up the Q-sheets at the
start when I saw the group nearing the finish on Hunsecker Road. A couple
stragglers followed later. Riders: Vaughn Good (leader), Ron Pfautz (sweep),
Dirk Suereth, Mark Buckwalter, Glenn Gastian, Dale Burkholder, Barry Lavender,
Brian Sowatsky, Andy Null, Ken Lessans, Tony Donato and non-LBC member Ron
Herr.
East Pete Treat July 17 Nice warm sunny weather, the
perfect day for a bike ride around East Petersburg with a great group of
riders. We arrived at Freeze and Friz at 10:00 just as they were opening. So we
were able to buy ice cream for energy for the ride back. No flats, falls or
lost riders. All was well in this Peloton led by Judy Flowers and sweep David
Flowers. Main Peloton: Carol Young, Jonas Fisher, Mark Engle, Michael Riggi,
Sue Bowman, Chip Scheaffer, Christ Ripartella, Marsha Chamberlain, Ed Mowery,
Dave and Lisa Heck and Bob Camp.
Ride to Strasburg July 17 A large crowd turned out for
a great ride on a fine summer day. We left Quality Inn with Gary in the lead
and Joe Beatty as sweep. Some of riders decided to do a B pace and went on
ahead. We made a stop in Intercourse and another in Strasburg. Thanks to Joe
for helping Heidi with her chain problem. He gets double pay for doing an
excellent job as sweep. Riders: Gary Musser (Ride Leader), Joe Beatty (sweep),
Heidi Malaeains, John Hinchey, Mary Stadden, Dave Kessler, Wes Lively, Lou
Gray, Lou Contino, Tom Moyers, Jeff and Pearl DeLong, Ray Landis, John Gantz,
Rich Wagner, Bob Brader, Jim Wentz, Diana Rollin, Bill Ressel, Randy Haluck,
Roger Sheaffer, Joe Knepper, Curtis Palmer, Tim Barley, Sr., John Mullineaux,
Irene Camp, Mike Tshudy, and Kay Knepper.
Silver Springs Ride July 18 Beautiful weather-NOT!
Rained all Sunday morning. No one showed. We'll try this one again. Riders:
Michael Hauck (leader).
Silver Springs Salunga July 18 Roads wet. No rain at
start time. No riders showed. Worse problem backspackle. Halfway through ride
started to rain so I abandoned the ride and went home to listen to the Tour de
France. Riders: Judy Flowers (leader)
Penn Run July 18 Rained out. Riders: Rachel Kreider
(leader)
Masonic Homes Tour July 18 Rained out--cancelled.
Riders: Dirk Suereth (leader)
Oregon Dairy Special July 21 We had a nice turnout of
riders despite the heat and humidity. We didn't lose anyone, except the leader
who went right when she should have gone left, but she quickly rectified her
mistake and only added another mile to the ride. Thanks to all for joining me!
Riders: Barb Kopenhafer (leader), Carol Young, Pat Kruse, Brian Winn, Sue
Boeman, Mark Engle, Carol Bowers, Tony DeNunzio, Maria, DeNunzio, Gary Musser,
Les Baker, and John McKelsey.
Donegal Springs July 24 About an hour before the start
of the ride, it rained. For the first 10-12 miles, the roads were very sloppy.
Everyone rode as a group and no one was dropped. While I was wiping the dirt
off my computer, I bumped it off my handlebars and that was the only thing that
was dropped. We averaged 18.3 mph. Riders: Kyle Awkerman (leader), Bob Roll
(sweep), Tom Hunt, Brian Sowatsky, Glenn Bastian, Ken Stadden and non-LBC
member Joe Hess
Rheems Relay July 24 Wet roads quickly dried and it
turned into a great day for biking. Riders: Jay Holstein (leader) and Alan
Bair.
Roots Auction & Return July 24 The morning started
out with rain by the time I arrived at Catholic High it was drizzle. The rain
stopped and the riders started showing up. I am positive that there were more
riders than signed the waiver form. Everyone started as a group but of course
the fast riders soon tired of the 15.5 mph pace and went on their own. Soon
after the rest stop at the golf course Steve had a flat. John Gantz and myself
went back to see if we could assist. We were almost back at the golf course and
Steve and Roger were heading towards us. The four of us continued on the route.
Lew Hershey was poking along waiting for us to catch up. The five of us then
rode together for a while. Roger tired of our pace and went on ahead. Dave
Kessler got a late start but caught up to us on the route. We saw the D ride
coming towards us on Kissel Hill Road. It looked like they had a pretty good
turn out. From al lthe chatter going on both riders it appears that everyone
had a pretty good time. Riders: Ray Landis (leader), Paul Benham, Chris
Merchant, Mark Ward, Lew Hershey, Steve Schmohl, John Gantz, Diana Rollin, Bill
Ressel, Scott Wagner, Don Whitehead, Tim Barley, Sr., Roger Sheaffer, Dave
Kessler, and non-LBC member Ron Callihan.
Not D Manding July 24 Questionable weather at the
start, but the rain waited for us. A few changed in the cue sheet produced no
lost riders. Welcome to new rider-Phil. Believe he likes his new bike and our
group. Thanks to Tony for patiently bringing up the end. Riders: Karen
Drawbaugh (leader), Tony Larosa (sweep), Dottie Sheehy, Anne Schleef, Carol
Young, Pat Kruse, Pearl DeLong, Sue Bowman, Jim Payton, Judy Hurlbut, Alan
Hurlbut, Ed Mowery, Barb Kopenhafer, Harry Campbell, Chris Riportella, Mark
Hinston, John McKelvey, and non-LBC member Phil Wright.
Anne's Ride July 25 Wonderful ride. Riders: Anne
Schleef (leader), Karen Drawbaugh (sweep), Cindy Snyder, Steve Snyder, Jim
Payton, Barb Koppenhafer, Alta Nolt, Anita Snader, Jeff Snader and Tom
Mellinger.
Tour de Marietta July 25 On the way over to East Pete
ran into some rain, sitting in the parking lot I was thinking is this going to
go or not. Went out at a pretty fast pace for a C ride. Someone asked "are we
late?" The rest stop was at Sheetz in Marietta and we had a visit from the Cape
Crusader. When we first started John Gantz was telling us that he had 40,000
miles and only two flats. Just as we were entering Maytown guess who had a
flat. That's right-John. Most of us stopped and gave moral support. While we
were stopped for John's flat we had a visit from Biker Grandma with her tiny
reading glasses. Finished the ride without any other mishaps. Of course the
last stretch back to East Pete, testosterone was flowing and the race began to
the parking lot. Mr. Gantz and Dave Kessler held back at the traffic light. We
all stopped and while we were struggling to get going, Gantz and Kessler blew
by us. One of the riders had some secret concoction during the ride and it
kicked in at the end. He came by us hollering for us to get out of his way. He
had a crazed look in his eyes so of course we all did get out of his way.
Oh yeah, the icing on the cake was when I got in my car to leave, the
battery was dead. Lew Hershey drove to WAWA and came back with battery cables
he borrowed from the manager. Steve Schmohl jumped my care and I was on my way.
Riders: Ray Landis (leader), Steve Schmohl, Joe Paparo, John Renard, Lew
Hershey, John Gantz, Dave Kessler, Christ Merchant, Bill Ressel, and Tammie
Calabrese.
Get A Life Lament July 25 I thought this ride was going
to be rained out again, but four riders showed up determined to brave the
elements. We averaged a leisurely 18.5 in the rain. Riders: Mark Buckwalter
(leader), Dale Burkholder, Ed Granger, Ken Lessans and Scott Wagner.
Tour de Middletown (changed to Masonic Home Tour) July 25
Lite rain at start time so we switched to a shorter ride which was rained
out last Sunday, Masonic Home Tour. Spotty showers continued throughout the
ride. Everybody enjoyed the ride despite the rain and suggested we do it again
on a nice day for a clear vista from the ridge above the Masonic Home. Riders:
Dirk Suereth (leader), Cindy Davis, John Donati, Craig Shreiner, Mike Lutz, and
Diane Lausman.
Artic Express July 28 Great evening for a bike ride.
The ride was modified a bit to shorten it and skip some road construction.
Dylan did a great job of keeping up with the group and definitely earned his
ice cream. Riders: Gary Musser (Ride Leader), Carol Young, Pat Kruse, Brian
Winn, Sue Bowman, Mark Engle, Barry and Dylan Lavender, Heidi, Mike, David and
Jeremy Hendrix.
New Holland Dutch July 31 This ride was originally
scheduled as the Galen Hall ride but I changed it to a less hilly ride deciding
to lead the Galen Hall ride sometime in the Fall. We had a good turnout for the
New Holland Dutch ride with the weather hot and sticky at 9 a.m. when we left
the Quality Inn parking lot. With only 5 miles into the ride, I quickly assumed
the position of sweep which I held onto for the duration. I never could find my
legs on this ride and finished the ride with non-club member Larry Groff who
was on his first club ride. We finished with a 13.5 average pace which also was
the advertised pace. The hot and humid weather was a clear reminder that the
CMBC is right around the corner. Riders: Joe Knepper (leader & sweep), Andy
Charles, Don Whitehead, Roger Sheaffer, Damon Schlott, Garry Musser, Rich
Wagner, Larry Furler, Craig Shreiner, Mark Ward, John Donati, Dean Wimer, Tim
Barley, Sr., Tony DeNunzion, Heidi and Mike Hendrix, Diane Lausman, Jim Bair,
and non-LBC members Stuart Stoltzfus and Larry Groff.
BC Classic July 31 Started with a blistering pace. Main
pack settled in, finishing at 18.5 mph. Other riders off the front came in at
20+ mph. Welcome! New member Neil Fickes. Riders: Rick Lehman (leader), Tom
Hunt, Ron Lehman, Neil Fickes, Jerre Hockenbrocht, Ken Lessans, Scott Wagner,
Barry Lavender, Mark Buckwalter, Kyle Awkerman and Andy Axmacher.
Penn Manor Panorama July 31 After picking up the trash
on our adopted highway, we headed for the hills and enjoyed picturesque views
of the Manor countryside. Riders: Rachel Kreider (leader), John Gantz, John
Renard, Harry Campbell, Ray Landis, Irene Camp, and Lew Hershey.
Adopt A Highway July 31 C & D riders met at Apple
Tree for breakfast and then trash pick-up on Columbia Avenue. Then we were
warmed up for the beautiful views of Penn Manor and rolling terrain with a
headwind. Good conversation, no flats, spills or lost riders. We kept the pace
at 11.4. Please join us on Oct. 30 for the next Adopt A Highway cleanup.
Remember walking is good for your bones (weight bearing exercise), biking
(cardiovascular). So be kind to your bones. See you in October! Riders: Judy
Flowers (leader), David Flowers (sweep), Judy Hurlbut, and Alan Hurlbut.
Rheems Relay July 31 72 degrees and humid at 8:00 a.m.
A great summer morning for biking. Great ride. Riders: Jay Holstein (leader),
Mark Engle, Dave Kessler and Janielle Willemin. |
