LBC Rides from the Past - July 2005

Get A Life Lament (A) Jul 2
Riders: Marlin Hess (leader), Jerre Hockenbrocht, Tom Rauba, Kent Shirk, Barry Lavender, Scott Wagner, Paul Ristine, Paul Swarm, and non-LBC members Pat Casey and John Davidson

Hershey Ride (B) Jul 2
My mother always said "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." This ride needs to be redone or removed from the list. Riders: Curtis Palmer (leader), Damon Schlott, Tim Good, Angie Galgon, Brian Sowatsky, Andy Smith, Rick Lehman, Craig Schreiner, David Hooper, Eric Blazer, and Carl Laws-Landis.

Pedal to Preserve (D) Jul 2
Nice day for a ride. Great group. Interesting pre-ride discussion about various health concerns and problems-difficulty breathing, chest and arm pains, keen issues. Found my self reviewing CPR training as I enjoyed the beautiful route. All finished with no health-related incidents. Stay healthy - keep riding. Riders: Karen Drawbaugh (leader), Dottie Sheehy (sweep), Jim Payton, Harry Campbell, Anne Schleef, Jim Forster, John Mullineaux, Harold Fulmer, Michael Riggi, and Janielle Willemin.

Masonic Home Tour (B) Jul 3
Beautiful morning for a ride--cool temps, low humidity, and clear skies. The group broke up into two factions with the trailing group including the leader maintaining the advertised pace. The view from the ridge line above the Masonic Home was outstanding. The visibility was at least 20 miles. Riders: Dirk Suereth (leader), Steven Gerber, Jerry Bryant, Craig Shreiner, Mike Lutz, Damon Schlott, Hank Smeltzer, and Jim Ness.

Back Run Ramble (C) Jul 3
With temperatures in the 70's and low humidity, it is no wonder we had 37 riders. It was nice to see some new faces for a C ride. Hopefully, the non-members who rode had a good time and will join the club. Riders: Tom Mellinger (leader), Harry Campbell, Jim Payton, Laura Paul, Mack Paul, Ray Landis, Lew Hershey, Jim Fiske, Steven Mazeski, Don Whitehead, Kevin Weber, Candae Deen, Steve Schmohl, Dave DiPipi, Cliff Lomboy, John Legere, Jeff DeLong, Pearl DeLong, Judy Colton, Rob Colton, Dave Kessler, John Gantz, Steven Holland, Jim Drumm, John Furry, Anne Schleef, Roger Sheaffer, Lou Gray, Joe Sears and non-LBC members, Hugo Van der Goes, Dave Battista, Kim Fiske, Todd Farraul, Dan Seg, Ray Foley, Jack Peterson, and Kirk Sears.

Ride to Bainbridge (C) Jul 3
Typical July weather of hot and humid. The only unusual occurrence was that we all rode together and finished together. Riders: John Peregoy (leader), Celeste Neuhard (sweep), Judy Flowers, David Flowers, John Mullineaux, Rose Ward, Craig Shreiner, John Gantz, and Lou Gray.

Farmersville-Hinkletown (A) Jul 3

Flatlanders 4th of July Favorite (A) Jul 4
There was a good turnout for the July 4th ride. The AA group shot ahead of the rest of the riders soon after the ride start. The B group ride leader actually finished ahead of the A leader who wound up serving as the sweep for all the groups. Craig Shreiner was first to the sprint line at the midway point of the Wrightsville Bridge. Riders: Tim Ihrig (leader), Ron Lehman, Dale Burkholder, Barry Lavender, Mark Buckwalter, Marty McKeon, Tony Donato, Scott Wagner, Ken Lessans, and non-LBC member John Davidson.

Flatlanders 4th of July Favorite (B) Jul 4
Nice day for a ride-not too hot or humid-good turnout. We broke up into 2 groups due to a mechanical problem about 5 miles into the ride. It probably turned out for the better because it's easier for traffic to deal with 7 bikers rather than 15 strung out for several hundred yards. Both groups averaged in the high 16 mph range. Riders: Dirk Suereth (leader), Andy Charles, Mark Ward, Emily McKeon, Ed Fearnow, Bobbie Fearnow, Craig Shreiner, Curtis Palmer, Damon Schlott, Andy Smith, Thomas Debiec, Ron Herr, and non-LBC members Tim Hoyle, Jess Marcini, and Cory Ortega.

Bossler Blast (East) (C) Jul 4
Wow, what a large turnout on a beautiful July 4th! We quickly split into 2 groups. The fast group was leaving the rest stop as we arrived. After the rest stop another group split from the leader's group. I think everyone enjoyed a good ride without any problems. Riders: Rachel Kreider (leader), Carl Kreider (sweep), Judy Flowers, David Flowers, Harry Campbell, Rose Ward, Gary Musser, Ray Landis, Jerre Hockenbrocht, Judy Hockenbrocht, Jim Forster, Steve Mazeski, Dave Kessler, John Gantz, Don Whitehead, Lou Gray, Joe Sears. Flo Good, Candae Deen, John Peregoy, Celeste Neuhard, Sylvia Newcomer, Rich Wagner. Mary Stadden, Bill Ressel, Roger Sheaffer, Rich Williams, Heidi Hendrix and non-LBC Members Rebecca Hayle and Dave Grifer

Kreiders (No) Ice Cream Ride (D) Jul 4
A great group of riders and pleasant weather made an enjoyable ride. There was a road closed for resurfacing so we had to ride in the grass and walk our bikes along the shoulder. The group split at the intersection of the Manheim Pike with some opting to ride to Kreiders hoping they would be open on July 4 and they were. The others went straight back. Some riders also found an abandoned kitten in a cornfield that has since found a new home. 17 club riders and 4 non-members. Riders: Janielle Willemin (leader), Dottie Sheehy (sweep), Jim Payton, Lloyd Melhorn, Susan Clough, Jonas Fisher, Tom Mellinger, Steven Mentzer, Marianne Devlin, Brian Holland, Art Young, Steve Holland, Michael Riggi and non-LBC members Cecilia Good, Laura David, Jack Peterson, and Connie Shentzer.

Mount Joy Twin Kiss Jul 6
Riders: Jeff DeLong (leader), Judy Flowers, Joe Sears, Lisa Greene (?), Pearl DeLong, Sandy LaRochelle, Dick Richard, Liz Richard, and non-LBC members, Matt Richard, Ben Richard, and Ethan Richard.

Birdsboro Ride (A) Jul 9
Bridge was out which meant we had to climb a ladder to get across the bridge. Riders: Ron Pfautz (leader), Marlin Hess, Brian Sowatsky, Craig Schreiner, Eileen Crone, Paul Smith, Dale Burkholder, Tim Norejko, Barry Lavender, and non-LBC member John Davidson.

Chicken Barn Ride (B) Jul 9

Ride to Manheim - Long (C) Jul 9
We had a nice turnout with over 20 riders coming to enjoy this sunny day with cooler than average temperatures. No mishaps or lost riders. Just good company and a pleasant ride! Riders: Steve Holland (leader), John Cardos (sweep), Kim Lausch, Matt London, Jim Payton, Harry Campbell, Rick Shoup, Jim Kulp, Ray Landis, Irene Camp, Pearl DeLong, Tom Mellinger, John Gantz, Jerre Hockenbrocht, Judy Hockenbrocht, Joe Sears, Lisa Greene, Judy Flowers, Janielle Willemin, and Bill Ressel and non-LBC member Ceci Good.

Tom's Special (D) Jul 9
Another good turnout with nearly 20 riders. In fact, several rode with me this morning on the C ride. I guess the weather was too good to waste on anything but a ride! We also welcomed a few members on their first ride this year. Riders: Steven Holland (leader), Mile Riggi (sweep), Jim Payton, Ray Landis, Dottie Sheehy, Carol Bowers, Michael Riggi, Chris Haluck, Dick Richard, Liz Richard, Rich Williams, Susie Williams, Marsha Chamberlain, Jeff DeLong, Pearl DeLong, Tim Good, Drew Bellmer (?), and John Gantz.

New Holland Reservoir (A) Jul 10
Nice morning for a ride. The group averaged 19.0 mph. Riders: Scott Wagner (leader), Mark Buckwalter, Neil Fickes, Barry Lavender, Ken Lessans, Tim Ihrig, Joe Robinson, and non-LBC members Jessica Marcini and Corrie Ortega.

Stackstown Spin (C) Jul 10
Today's C ride was worth 740 total miles for LBC if each of the 20 riders logged their 37 miles afterward on bikejournal.com. (Hey, everyone - it's never too late to add the ride to your online journal!) Even more valuable, though, was the fun we had enjoying a perfect cycling day with a great group of people. The general consensus was that this route, unfamiliar to many, is a "must-do-again-soon" for future club rides. For some of us, part of the route was yesterday's Chicken Barn ride in reverse. The pace was relaxed on the first half, with the entire group riding together most of the way - a recovery day for those who pushed the limit yesterday. A few faster riders spun off at the midpoint on Stackstown Road, while the rest continued at a leisurely 13+ pace to the end. Since there were no rest stops on the route, we created one by stopping at the airport on Airport Road, where a plane was ready to take off with some skydivers. No one accepted an invitation to try it, although Tom Mellinger confessed that in his younger (and poorer) days, he once jumped out of a plane on a dare to earn 20 bucks. Apparently the money was not incentive enough - when the time came to jump, he was assisted by a good shove out the door. Tom says these days the stakes would be higher: for him to even consider skydiving there would have to be a Ferrari in the deal. Ten miles from the end, our sweep (Lisa Heck) took a dive into the grass while trying to avoid gravel and holes on the turn from Musser onto Flory Road. She thought she'd gotten away with it undetected, but word travels fast when there's a biker down. The incident raised an important philosophical question: who becomes sweep if and when the sweep is incapacitated? Do we elect a Sweep Pro Tem? Or does the cycling spouse of the sweep, who just happens to be on the ride, assume the duties? What do the LBC bylaws have to say on the subject? (Just kidding.) Fortunately Lisa wasn't injured and the ride concluded without further mishap. We especially enjoyed having newcomers Tracy and Ron Irvine with us today, and hope they'll be back soon for another ride as new club members. Riders: Candae Deen (leader), Tim Good, Steve Gerber, Randy Haluck, Ray Landis, Brian Mitchell, Steve Mazeski, Rose Ward, John Gantz, Jeff DeLong, Pearl DeLong, Roger Sheaffer, Rich Wagner, Tom Mellinger, Jim Forster, Lisa Heck (sweep), Dave Heck, Bill Ressel, and non-LBC members Tracy and Ron Irvine.

Three Lakes Loop (B) Jul 10
Riders: Damon Schlott (leader), Andy Charles, March Ward, Curtis Palmer, Steve Young, Craig Shreiner, Harry Smith, and non-LBC members Buzz Busey, Kim Barden, Stu Barden, and Diane Stump.

Buena Vista Short (D) Jul 10
The perfect weather made the ride enjoyable. We were treated to postcard perfect views of Lancaster farmland along Scenic Drive. Eight club members and 2 non-members. Riders: Janielle Willemin (leader), Penny Kulp (sweep), Jim Payton, Harry Campbell, Jon Lyons, Steve Holland, Jim Kulp, John Rohrkemper and non-LBC members Joann Clionsky and Matt Richard.

Safe Harbor Ride (A) Jul 16
Tough ride on a hot and humid day. Mark and Scott dropped the field for an 18+ mph average. Dan was our lost rider for the day. What happened Dan? Riders: Rick Lehman (leader), Mark Buckwalter, Scott Wagner, Barry Lavender, Dan Newcomer, Ken Lessans, and Pat Casey.

CVHS Strasburg (B) Jul 16
Riders: Brian Mitchell (leader), Brian Sowatsky, Damon Schlott, Don Whitehead, Andy Charles, Harry Smith, Roger Sheaffer, John Donati, Craig Shreiner, Dirk Suereth, Tim Ihrig, Diane Lausman, and Cindy Davis.

Riders: Barb Koppenhafer (leader), Dottie Sheehy (sweep), Tony LaRosa, Irene Camp, Carol Bowers, Janielle Willemin.

New Holland Long (C) Jul 16
Great ride, fun group! Beat the rain but won the humidity. Welcome to first time rider with LBC, Susan. Riders: Jim Payton (leader), Dave Kessler, Phil Wright, Randy Haluck, Flo Good, Dave Heck, Lisa Heck, Tom Mellinger, Jim Wentz, Pam Klingensmith, Susan (?), and Eric Klett.

Terre Hill Ride (A) Jul 17
Riders: Mark Buckwalter (leader), Ken Lessans, Tom Hunt, Dale Burkholder, Paul Swarm and Angela Swarm.

Penn Run (C) Jul 17
It was cloudy and threatening rain, but everybody was anxious to ride. All the morning rides had been rained out. The fast group did their break away and the rest of us stayed together. Lew developed a hitch in his git-along about the half way point and ended up with a 3-speed. We got to Molly's in Manheim just in time to wait out a downpour. By the time we finished the sun way out. Welcome to first time guest rider Michael Ruff. Riders: John Peregoy (leader), John Mullineaux, Ray Landis, David Flowers, Judy Flowers, Lew Hershey, Mark Ward, Rose Ward, Craig Shreiner, John Donati, Randy Haluck, Dirk Suereth, Kevin Weber, Lou Gray and non-LBC member Michael Ruff.

York Heritage Trail (D) Jul 17
Rained out. Riders: Dottie Sheehy (leader)

Ride to Baskin Robbins Jul 20
Everyone agreed that Alan's newly designed cued route to Baskin Robbins is a keeper. Too bad he did not feel well enough to ride there with us. Pedaling along minus the high humidity, under windless, clear blue skies was a treat even before we all arrived to the real treat . . . Ice Cream Cones. Judy Hurlbut (leader), Sandra LaRochelle (sweep), Cecilia Good, Gail & Steve Brainard, Bob Brader, Everett & Ellen News-wanger, Dick & Liz Richard, Matt, Ben & Evan Richard.

Donegal Springs (A) Jul 23
It was one of those days - no matter which way you went, it seemed like you had a head wind. The headwind did not affect Barry and Neil and off they went. With 18 miles to go, they disappeared off the front. Riders: Kyle Awkerman (leader), Mark Buckwalter, Tom Hunt, Neil Fickes, Andrew Mead, Rick Lehman, Barry Lavender, Scott Wagner, and non-LBC member Glenn Bastian.

New Witness Tree Trek (C) Jul 23
Riders: John Renard (leader), Jeff DeLong, Pearl DeLong, Craig Shreiner, Lew Hershey, Dave Harris, JoAnn Harris, John McKelvey, Rich Williams, Randy Haluck, Henry Manning, Joe Sears, Lisa Greene, Lou Gray, Bill Ressel, Carol Weisser, and Jim Drumm.

Back Run Ramble (C) Jul 23
Perfect weather (sunny) for a bike ride with a great rider turn out. We had a loose crank twice on the same bike and a flat front tire on another bike. One lost rider who was found and regrouped and no crashes. Finished with enough time to go on the afternoon ride at East Pete or to join the Roy Baldwin ride, both starting at 1:00 or catch some of the Tour de France. Judy Flowers (leader), David Flowers (sweep), Ray Landis, Rich Wagner, John Mullineaux, Candae Deen, Eric Klett ?sp, Joe Knepper, Steve Schmohl, John Renard, Dave Kessler, John Furry, Lisa & Dave Heck, Bill & Nancy Ambler, John Gantz, Flo Good, Jim Wentz, Jim Drumm, Rachel Kreider, Celeste Neuhard, John Peregoy

East Pete Treat (D) Jul 23
We were blessed with near perfect weather. Our sweeps forgot to read the cue sheet and meet us at the starting point after the ride. Great group, great extended "cookie ride." Riders: Harry Campbell (leader), Dottie Sheehy (sweep), Phil Wright, Jim Payton, Jonas Fisher, Karen Drawbaugh, Cindy Snyder, Don Lewis, Chris Haluck, Michael Riggi, Connie Simmons, Doug Stark, Alta Nolt, Larry Sherman, Pam Tronsor, John Rohrkemper, Irene Camp, Marsha Chamberlain, Harold Fulmer and non-LBC member Joann Clionsky.

Detour Thru Deodate (A) Jul 24
This ride goes through a lot of scenic country, and the less-humid weather made it even better. Other than the ride leader flatting at 3 miles into the ride, there were no other incidents reported, other than spotting Dirk short-cutting the course. The lead pack averaged about 19 mph. Riders: Tim Ihrig (leader), Mike Lutz, Tom Hunt, Mark Buckwalter, Dirk Suereth, Andy Null, Barry Lavender, Dale Burkholder, and non-LBC members Jessica Marcini, John Davidson, John Moore, and Ken Warham.

Warwick Tour (B) Jul 24
I am always amazed at what the words "party" and "pizza" can do for the turnout at a ride. Today those words brought 27 of us out for a great ride. As predicted the group quickly split into two main groups with smaller clusters of riders either in front (mostly) or behind (rarely) the main groups. Your scribe took his often imitated but never duplicated position of leading from the rear. At 10 miles out, I thought I saw a couple of stragglers behind us. We waited for them to catch up only to discover it was a few of the fast guys who had taken a wrong turn and proving once again that A riders all suffer from a form of high speed dyslexia. Needless to say, we got dropped, again! About 10 miles from the finish, Bubba developed a mechanical problem which was quickly fixed. The small group we were riding with, however, was so concerned they just kept on going to the finish. The only other cyclist who stayed with us was the good doctor. We all returned to a great Tour de France party at the Lititz Rec Center. Thanks to Barb K and her crew for putting on a good feed. Riders: John Mullineaux (leader), John Renard, Rich Wagner, Dave Kessler, Steve Gerber, Candae Deen, Curtis Palmer, Craig Shreiner, Andy Charles, Lou Gray, Steve Schmohl, Damon Schlott, Harry Smith, Bob Colton, Brian Mitchell, Jack Bingham, Michelle Bingham, Dorothy Weber, Bob Brader, Rich Williams, Brian Sowatsky, Jim Forster, Don Whitehead, Diane Lausman, Andy Smith, Joe Beatty, and Bill Ressel.

Toll Gate Tour (C) Jul 24
It was a beautiful morning for a ride. We had a small group that stayed together the whole ride. I am not sure if 8:30 was too early or everyone thought it was going to rain or snow based on the previous rides I lead. Riders: Jeff DeLong (leader), John Gantz, Ray Landis, Randy Haluck, Pearl DeLong, Mary Stadden, Roger Sheaffer, and Bill Crawford.

Warwick Mini Ramble (D) Jul 24
A "D"elightful "D"ay for a "D" ride. A "D"edicated half "D"ozen showed up early to add a few extra miles. The main event proved to be a rather challenging, hilly ride. Welcome a few new riders and Chuck's "new wheels." Had a great time after the ride at the Tour de France get together. Good food! Good company! Everyone's efforts greatly appreciated. Riders: Karen Drawbaugh (leader), Steve Snyder (sweep), Jim Payton, Cindy Snyder, Dan Snyder, Alta Nolt, Anne Schleef, Ton LaRosa, Jim Drumm, Joe Auchey, Pam Tronsor, John Rohrkemper, Stephanie Jaczynski, Chuck Wissing, Jill Mac-Kenzie, Jim White, Art Young, Dottie Sheehy, and non-LBC members Helen Weber, Rose Phillips, and Leslie Haschak.

Ice Cream Topped with Lititz Jul 27
Between storms we had a good ride. Maria kept the pace up. Thanks to all that had faith we wouldn't get wet and we didn't! Riders: Harry Campbell (leader), Jack Bingham (sweep), Michelle Bingham, Dorothy Weber, Tony DeNunzio, and Maria DeNunzio. Vintage Velo Run (A) Jul 30 Riders: Mark Buckwalter (leader), Andy Null, Dale Burkholder, Neil Fickes, Barry Lavender, Ken Lessans, Ken Stadden, and non-LBC members Jordan Binkley and Kevin Binkley.

Hammer Creek (B) Jul 30
As one would expect, this rather large group split into predictable clusters soon after the start. A few miles out Candae flatted. After an issue with her spare tube, we discovered an interesting although not surprising fact. Candae needs a large stem. Short ones do absolutely nothing for her! Ten miles later, Bubba started to bonk badly. We got him to the stop at Mollies but even a Coke didn't help. I dismissed the rest of the group to return to the starting location while I escorted the bonking Bubba back the shortest possible way. Riders: John Mullineaux (leader), Candae Deen, Cindy Davis, Rich Wagner, Matt London, Damon Schlott, Dave Kessler, Paul Yatabe, John Ericson, Bill Ambler, Joe Robinson, Don Whitehead, Lou Gray, John Renard, Dirk Suereth, Dale Buckwalter, Tom Diebler, Roger Sheaffer, and Don George.

New East Pete to Etown (C) Jul 30
Riders: John Peregoy (leader), Celeste Neuhard, Mary Stadden, Marilyn Gelsinger, John Gantz, Jim Wentz, Dick Nuffort, Eleanor Nuffort, Barry Gelsinger, Doug Stark, Pearl DeLong and Jeff DeLong.

Penn Manor Panorama (C) Jul 30
After spending 2 hours picking up trash for Adopt-The-Highway we were ready to go for a ride. It was hot and humid but the air felt great as we rode along creeks and shaded roadways and climbed the hills. Harry treated when we stopped at the Central Manor Mart because "we did a great job on the highway clean-up". Welcome to Al, a new member and first time cleanup team member. Riders: Rachel Kreider (leader), Carl Kreider, Harry Campbell, and Al Savage

Roots Auction & Return (C) Jul 31
The last weekend of July saw several LBC members ushering out the month with major and minor cycling mishaps, and unfortunately several of today's C riders added their names to that list. Not long into the ride Barry Gelsinger's front tire suddenly flatted, resulting in a fall and a skinned knee. His "teammate," Mr. John "Lantz" Gantz (appropriately attired in a Maillot Jaune!) couldn't stop in time and plowed into (or over?) him, breaking some spokes in his wheel. With neither bike roadworthy at that point, Marilyn turned around and pedaled back to the parking lot for the sag wagon. Along the rest of the way we alternately picked up stragglers from the breakaway group at the front, and lost a few others who succumbed to achy joints, the rising temperatures and humidity, or the temptation of a shorter route home. Kudos to two newcomers, Traceylyn Gardner and Anthony Smith, both of whom finished the ride in fine form. Riders included Candae Deen (leader), Steve Mazeski, John Mullineaux, Rich Wagner, Harry Smith, Steve Gerber, Barry Gelsinger, Marilyn Gelsinger, Joe Knepper, Pearl DeLong, Jeff DeLong, Don Whitehead, Kim Lausch, John Gantz, Tom Mellinger, Michael Hauck, Dave Kessler, Bob Long, Bill Ressel, John McKelvey (sweep), Carol Weisser, Brian Mitchell, Joe Auchey, Helen Weber; we also welcomed non-members Tracy Irvine, Traceylyn Gardner and Anthony Smith.

Butter Side Up (D) Jul 30
Beautiful day for a nice low-key ride. Xenia did great on her first ride after knee surgery. All did a great job staying together and keeping pace. Riders: Karen Drawbaugh (leader), John Cardos/Steve Mentzer (sweeps), Jim Payton, Phil Wright, Steve Holland, Brian Holland, Alta Nolt, Jonas Fisher, Xenia Muniz, Bill Crawford, Mike, Debi and Bevalee Tshudy, Ellen Koppenhafer, Barb Koppenhafer, Penny Kulp, Karen Wisniewski, and Irene Camp.

Two Lakes Loop (B) Jul 31
Riders: Damon Schlott (leader), Mike Lutz, Bill Ambler, Cindy Davis, Diane Lausman, Tom Rauba, Emily McKeon and Don George.

Rock Mt Ride to Denver (D) Jul 31
Typical summer Sunday ride-sunny, humid with not too much traffic. Everybody seemed to enjoy the scenery and for an Ephrata ride the roads were pretty flat and smooth with just a few rolling hills. Riders: Pam Klingensmith (leader), Tony LaRosa (sweep), Phil Wright, John Cardos, Jim Payton, Steve Holland, Karen Drawbaugh, Cindy Snyder, Steve Snyder, Barb Koppenhafer, Reuben Weaver, Ellen Koppenhafer, and Tony LaRosa.
