LBC Rides from the Past - June 2004

.

East Pete to the Airport June 2
The weather looked threatening when we left Freeze & Frizz. Modified the return route to get back sooner. Riders: Gary Musser (leader), Joe Knepper, Andrew, Dana, Brooke and Savannah Mead, and non-LBC members: Barry and Dylan Lavender.

Chicken Barn Ride June 5
Fourteenth consecutive time there's been rain in the forecast for a ride I've been scheduled to lead. Weatherman's often wrong, not this time. Maybe I should take the hint so we can all get some miles in. Riders: Lou Gray (leader)

Chickies Creek Long June 5
All prepared to ride-shower ccap over the helmet, plastic bags over shoes; pancho over the body-the rain and darkness won-no one rode. Riders: Harry Campbell (leader), John Gantz (sweep)

Jigger Shop Jaunt June 5
No ride-steady rain! Riders: Lisa Greene (leader)

Get a Life Lament June 5
Rained out. Riders: Mark Buckwalter (leader)

Anne's Great Wall Ride June 6
Weather was very dreary after a rainy day on Saturday. I am changing the name of this new ride to just Anne's Ride. I think I scared people off with the "Great Wall" title. It was a pretty ride on rolling hills: Anne Schleef (leader), Jim Forster

Farmland Meander June 6
Nice ride, roads a little wet-but no rain. Welcomed Bob, from Bucks County, on his first LBC ride. Bucks County account for 50% of the riders: Jim Payton (leader), Karen Drawbaugh (sweep), Bob Brader, John Cardos, Dave Kessler, Cindy Snyder, Steve Snyder, Tom Hodge and non-LBC member Bob Long, Bucks County.

Druck Valley Salley June 6
I was asked to lead this ride at the last minute, and up until then it looked as if the rain would prevent us from ever venturing out. Low and behold the skies parted and roads dried out enough to provide traction on hills as steep as 10%. Three monsters of the V02 max motored up Tower Road at nearly 10 mph. This ride was scheduled for the same day as the USPro in Philly, and at ¼ of the distance it still took us almost ½ the time the "big boys" need at 156 miles. Perspective sucks: Ken Lessans (leader in name only), Mark Buckwalter and Mark Davis.

Kreiders Ice Cream Ride June 9
Beautiful ice cream evening-A minor mishap when Dylan Lavender (8 years) went down and bravely had a cut cared for. A friend group rewarded with delicious ice cream. Riders: Harry Campbell (leader), Judy Flowers (sweep), Brain Winn, Carol Bowers, Don Lewis, Rodney Moseman, Judy Hurlbut, Alan Hurlbut, Gary Musser, and non-LBC members Barry and Dylan Lavender.

Farmersville Frolic June 12
After a week or more of rain, high temperatures, and humidity, we had a cool, dry and windless day. No problems, no flats, and no breakdowns. No one want to sweep so I rate at the rear. Riders: John McKelvey (leader), Jim White, Dale Gill, Liz Gill, Steven Schmohl, Ray Landis, Lew Hershey, Diana Rollin, Dave Kessler, Erik Fromen, Roger Sheaffer, Ed Schoenberger, Mary Stadden, John Rohrkemper, Tammie Calabrese, and non-LBC member H. Rand.

Ride to Manheim Long June 12
We were treated to a beautiful day. Were it not for a few spills the ride would be known as IDEAL. Riders: Harry Campbell (leader), Alan Hurlbut, Judy Hurlbut, Janielle Willemin, John Gantz, Irene Camp, Harold, Fulmer and non-LBC member Kevin McGarry.

Bachmanville Special June 12
I made a new ride by combining the first half of the "Northern Exposure" and the second half of the BC Classic (Breakfast Club). The ride goes through downtown Bachmanville and leaves Manheim, going north through Lebanon County and Dauphin County. Riders: Kyle Awkerman (leader), Denny White, Tom ????, Glenn Bastian, Ron Pfautz, Brian Sowatsky, Brian Haldeman, Rodney Rhoads, Kenn Lessans, Mark Buckwalter, and non-LBC members Bart Torre and Barry Lavender.

Central Manor June 13
Wonderful weather for a weekend ride. Cloudy 65 . Hard pace for a hilly ride. Most averaged 18.5 MPH! Ken held a gap that could barely be caught. We never saw Mark again! The Solo King! Riders: Rick Lehman (leader), Dirk Suereth, Steve Gerber, Ken Lessans, Mark Buckwalter, Paul Swarm, Angel Swarm and non-LBC members Andy Noll, Frank Herr, Joe Hess and Jim Diffendall.

Penryn Pancake Promenade June 19
No one showed for this ride. I had a complex all day. Riders: Steve Mentzer (leader).

Druck Valley Salley June 19
After a week of rain and humidity we lucked out with a cool morning to tackle the hills of York County. Welcome back Joe Bucek after an 8-year leave of absence from riding. Although I think we lost him early in the ride to a mechanical problem. It was a clear day and everyone enjoyed the view from Sam Lewis Park if not the climb to get there. Steve was seen tooling down Blue Rock Road. Riders: Dirk Suereth (leader), Jeff DeLong, Steve Brainard, Tom Rauba, Joe Bucek and Paul Smeltz.

Northern Exposure June 19

New Holland Long June 20
Just one minor problem-had one rider who found out things run a lot smoother when you remember to bring the front wheel. Pack broke into two packs. Found out it's okay leading from the rear. Riders: Jim Payton (leader), Pam Klingensmith (sweep), Erik Fromen, Greg deVitry, Steve Schmohl, Tom Mellinger, Lou Gray, Diana Rollins, Bill Ressel, Ray Landis, John Gantz, Bill Ambler, Dave Kessler, and non-LBC member Chip Schaeffer.

Eastern Lancaster County ½ Century June 20
This was the day after the Dream Ride & Pedal to Preserve. Most of today's riders did one of those rides yesterday, but still had enough power left for a 50-mile ride. After a week of rain and humidity, the weather today was fantastic. Riders: Brian Mitchell (leader), Mike Lutz, Steve Gerber, Craig Shreiner, and Andy Charles.

Freeze & Frizz is Where It Is June 23
Beautiful night for a bike ride. The only problem of the evening was when Mike Shiley's chain jumped off of the chainring. An adjustment by his father, and we were on our way. Riders: Gary Musser (leader), Carol Young, Pat Kruse, Brian Winn, Sue Bowman, Alan Hurlbut, Judy Hurlbut, Curtis Palmer, Carl Kreider, David and Mike Shiley and non-LBC member Carol Bowers.

Picnic Ride - Casual June 26
Everyone rode together enjoying the sights of nature along the route. Two young geese gamboled several yards beside us, 5 small goats leaped across a field as we passed and the trout in a stream under Kreider Road smiled probably wondering why we were pedaling so hard. Carl Kreider waved as we passed his garage where he was working on his car. Coming back into the park on the trail, Pam took a spill. Her helmet cracked as her head hit the macadam. Beause of some dizziness, Tony took her to the hospital. The helmet did it's job-she's okay. Sorry, Pam and Tony missed the good picnic food. Thanks, Tony -you're a good sweep. Riders: Judy Hurlbut (leader), Tony LaRosa (sweep), Jan O'Hara, Alan Hurlbut, Sue Bowman, Alta Nolt, Marsha Chamberlain, Debra Tshudy, Don Doutrich, Pearl DeLong, Bob Camp, Jan Birch, John Burry, Pam Klingensmith, and non-LBC member Chip Schaeffer.

Riders: Dirk Suereth (leader), Barry Lavender, Marlin Hess, Brian Sawatsky, Mark Buckwealter, Rick Reisinger, Tim Ihrig, Tom Hunt, Brian Mithcell, Larry Keating, Paul Swarm, and non-LBC members: Ron Herr, Bart Torre, Bart Torre, Jr. and Frank Herr.

LBC Picnic Ride June 26
The warm up ride "B" and "C" for th epicnic was what was needed. Both were well worth the little effort it took. Riders: Harry Campbell (leader), Jay Holstein (sweep), Bob Brader, Rick Shoup, Jeff DeLong, Mike Tshudy, Lew Hershey, Judy Flowers, Tom Mellinger, Don Whitehead, John Mullineaux, Mary Stadden, Gary Musser, John Gantz, David Flowers, Irene Camp, Ray Landis, Rachel Kreider, Mike, Heidi, Jeremish, and David Hendrix, Curtis Palmer, Steve Brainer, Dave Kessler, Joe Sears, Lisa Greene, Marilyn Gelsinger, John Rohrkumper, Ed Schoenberger, and Rich Wagner.

Warwick Tour June 27
It was sunny and breezy as we started out for an afternoon ride. Ed F and his young son elected to ride their own pace and distance. Leader led from the rear until the midway point where Carl and I were left in the dust! Leader took a short cut home and Carl finished the ride to get his vehicle. Welcome to Stuart, a first time rider. Riders: Rachel Kreider (leader), Carl Kreider, Ed Fearnow, Kolga Fearnow, Steve Gerber, Bill Ressel, Ed Granger, and non-LBC member Stuart Stoltzfus.

Riders: John Renard (leader), Mike Lutz, Tim Good, Andy Charles, Tony Denunzio, and Craig Schreiner. Maytown Circle June 27 The leader arranged for an absolutely fantastic morning-blue skies, mild temperature, low humidity and a slight breeze. Now if he only had such control over numerous other things. Riders: Tom Mellinger (leader), John Gantz, Ray Landis, Lew Hershey, Jim Forster, Carol Young, Pat Kruse, John Hinchey, Suzanne Metzler, Harold Fulmer, Steve Schmohl, and non-LBC member Chip Schaeffer.
