LBC Rides from the Past - May 2004
Manheim Madness May 1 Beautiful, breezy day! Finished
in two groups; one at 18+ mph thanks to twin diesel locomotives, Dale and Mark.
And the other group at a more "reasonable" pace approaching 16 mph. Riders:
Rick Lehman (leader), Tim Barley Sr, Lou Contino, Dale Burkholder, Mark
Buckwalter, Ken Lessans, Andy Axmacher and Tom Wandzusk
CVHS Churchtown 2 May 1 Riders: Brian Mitchell
(leader), Don Whitehead, Jeff Delong, Dirk Suereth, Candae Deen, Steve

Doutrsch, Kim & Henry Manning, Carol Young, Janelle Willemin, Gary Musser,
Dan Shiley, Mike Shiley.
Buena Vista Long May 2 It was very cloudy and
threatening at the start at Conestoga Valley H S. Dirk assured us all that the
weather radar did not show any bands of rain coming our way. It immediately
began to drizzle, on and off. It really began to rain in earnest as we
approached Gap. It was agreed by all (except Paul) that we should cut the ride
short, so we took a short cut that shortened the ride by about 6 miles. It did
eventually stop raining as we rode westward, and the sun actually peaked out
about a mile from CV, as Paul had assured us it would. All in all, a miserable,
wet ride, like so many others this spring. Riders: Jim Weaver (leader), Dirk
Suereth, Mike Gorczyca, Paul & Angela Swarm and Ken Lessans.
East Pete Treat May 2 We didn't get wet, we didn't
follow the cue sheet, we didn't speed. However, we did stay together and we did
see new areas and we did have fun. Riders: Harry Campbell (leader), Anne
Schleef (sweep), Alan Hurlbut, Jim Payton, Ray Landis, Jim Forster, Lew
Hershey, Erik Fromen, John Gantz, Tom Mellinger, and Dave Kessler.
The Other May 2 D-Ride May 2 The April Pedaller listed
the May 2 D ride at 10:00 while the May issue listed the ride at 9:00. The
result was 2 D rides. Our ride roughly followed the Chiques Creek ride, but was
shortened due to rain. We had 2 first time riders, Amy and Justin. Riders: Ed
Mowery (leader), Pam Klingensmith, Pam Tronsor, John Rohrkemper, Amy Giaquinto
and Justin Giaquinto.
Freeze & Frizz is where it is May 5 Great evening
for a ride. Temperatures in the mid 60's, not a cloud in the sky, and a gentle
breeze. A great ride was had by all!! Gary Musser (leader), Gary Musser
(sweep), Gary Musser and Gary Musser!!
Swing Ride May 6 We had a beautiful evening to start
this year's series and the deck at Hennigan's was open! After a good workout,
eight of us retired to the deck for dinner. Riders: John Mullineaux (Leader),
Don Whitehead, Jim Forster, Roger Sheaffer, Dirk Sureth, Bob Brader, Lou Gray,
Bill Ambler. Jeff Delong, Brian Mitchell, Mike Lutz, Kevin Farmer
Steve's Ride May 9 The loop through Manheim Twp.
Neighborhoods and the stop at Stauffers for doughnuts was terrific. Riders:
Steve Mentzer (leader), Alan Hurlbut (sweep), John Gantz, Ray Landis, Karen
Drawbaugh, Steve & Cindy Snyder, Harry Campbell, Jim Payton, Chris
Longenecker, Rick Shoup, Judy Hurlbut, Jan O'Hara, Judy & David Flowers,
Dave Kessler, Tammie Calabrese and Larry Sherman
Tour of Upper Conestoga Valley May 8 You missed a very
good ride! A head wind & some major rolling hills for the first 15 miles,
but after that it was a bikers delight. Beautiful view's and long down-hills
with a tail wind pushing us home. Welcome to Melanie on her first club ride and
good luck on your mini marathon. Riders: Don Whitehead (leader), Mike Lutz
(sweep), Melanie Marinaccio, Lou Gray, Mike Tshudy and Brian Mitchell
Annapolis B 4 Spring Fling May 8 Annapolis is a
beautiful town, and everyone enjoyed the ride. Our very good friend Dottie
Sheehy was not able to finish the ride, due to health reasons. We all wish her
well and hope to see her on the next ride to Annapolis. Riders: Anne Schleef
(leader), Alan & Judy Hurlbut, Alta Nolt, Tom Mellinger, Dottie Sheehy,
John Currans, Cindy Snyder, Jim Payton, Mart Rohde, Brett? Rohde, Deane &
Mike Gainey, Janeille Willemin, Thomas & Dana Hodges.
Back Run Ramble May 8 Nice group on a nice day. Bridge
out caused a split in the riders-we had a right and left selection. Joe sat on
the road for a little rest. Riders: Harry Campbell (leader), Jan Birch, Gary
Musser, Rick Shoup, Lew Hershey, Bob Brader, Steve Schmohl, Jeff Delong, Dave
Kessler, Doug Stark, John Gantz, Ray Landis, Tom Nicklaus, Joe Sears, Tim
Barley, Tom & Liz Gates, Larry Keating, John Mullineaux, Heidi Hendrix,
Roger Sheaffer, Joe Knepper, John Peregoy and Celeste Neuhard.
Giro d'Earl May 8 Fair weather and a moderate easterly
breeze helped boost the speed on the way back to Lititz. Everyone in the main
pack finished at an average speed of 19 mph. The leader was the follower on
this ride, finishing at the advertised pace of 17 mph
or was that 16.8?
Riders: Bob Colton (leader), Ed Fearnow, Scott Wagner, Mark Buckwalter, Dirk
Suereth, Paul Smeltz, Neil Gussman, Marlin Hess, Andrew Hutnik, Barry Lavender
and Matt Heiser .
Vintage Velo Run May 9 Average pace was 16.9 mph.
Weather was cool and cloudy at first, but the sun came out and warmed things up
near the end of the ride. Riders: Mark Buckwalter (leader), Mike Lutz, Chris
Watson and Joseph Hess
Oregon Dairy Special May 12 Perfect day for an ice
cream ride. Welcome to Carol, Tom and Dana. Riders: John Cardos (leader), Dana
Hodges (sweep), Judy Flowers, Carol Bowers, Gary Musser, B J Allen and Thomas
Hodges.
Spring Fling Wildwood Crest May 14 A large group of 24
riders gathered to participate in this Friday afternoon ride from Wildwood
Crest. The weather was very nice and the ride was uneventful, except for a
double blowout of Alan's rear tire. Fortunately, Rodney was with us and showed
us how to use a dollar bill to "repair" a blown tire. It worked and Alan
managed to get back "home" ok Riders: Jim Payton (leader), Karen Drawbaugh,
Joyce & Ed McGettigum, Anne Schleef, Steve & Elaine Young, Alan &
Judy Hurlbut, Jeff & Pearl Delong, Lloyd Melhorn, Judy Flowers, Verna &
Rodney Moseman, Nancy Youst, Corey Brandt, Chuck Wissing, Myra Carter, Connie
Simmons, Steve Mentzer, Don Lewis, Lou Gray and Gary Musser.
Ride to Bainbridge May 15 Nice turnout despite being
Spring Fling weekend. Glad you had a great time there. Some of us stayed home
and enjoyed a great day here in Lancaster. Riders: Roger Sheaffer (leader),
John Gantz (sweep), Matt London, Craig Shreiner, Harry Smith, Andy Charles,
Rick Reisinger, Bob Colton, Scott Wagner, Vaughn Good, Rick Lehman, Kendall
Lehman and Andrew Hutnik.
Rheems Relay May 15 Great weather. Great ride. No
incidents except that we had to detour around Marietta Days that was on the
main street in Marietta. Riders: Jay Holstein (leader), Dave Kessler and Rick
Shoup
Mount Airy Ride May 15 Not much to report, but one flat
near the beginning of the ride which left Ken Lessans to catch up. That seems a
little fishy. At Wood Lot Road we split into two groups. As the ride went along
group 1 was getting smaller and group 2 larger. A good ride enjoyed by all.
Riders: Ron Pfautz (leader), Mark Buckwalter, Glenn Basham?, Marlin Hess,
Angela & Paul Swarm, Paul Smeltz, Gil Linde, Brent Linde, Dale Burkholder,
Ken Lessans and Barry Lavender
Fifteen Mile Ride May 16 Conversation was so good that
our leader took us almost 20 miles on the 15 mile ride. No one even questioned
which way I was going! Riders: John Cardos (leader), John McKelvey (sweep), Pam
Klingensmith, Mike Tshudy, Erik Fromen, Deb Tshudy
Drayer Drag May 16 Riders: Mike Lutz (leader); Jude
Sharp, Diane Lausman, and Bill Ressel
Bowmansville/Shirk Ride May 16 It was a beautiful day
to ride hills and see the PA Dutch countryside, except we temporally lost 2
riders from the very start. One had a crash in the parking lot, but he caught
up to us later. He had a nice cut on his elbow and we had 17 miles to the food
stop, but he said he would be ok until then. After we left the food stop/first
aid station, we had the first of 3 flats. The first flat was fixed and they
caught up to us shortly after we fixed the second flat. We took a short break
about 12 miles to go until we reached the Brownstown Vo-Tech school to finish,
and there the third flat occurred. The leader having the last two. My first on
the rear wheel and the second on the front wheel. I made mention that the first
flat was my first in almost 15 years. Well, I guess that did it for the second.
I got a tube from Steve and promptly fattened that one, even before getting it
on the bike. So, John and the rest of the riders finished and John returned for
me in his car. If nothing else I got a good start on my summer tan. Thanks
again, John. Riders: Art Leid (leader), Steve Gerber (sweep), Jerry Bryant,
Andy Charles, John Gantz & Craig Shreiner.
Toll Gate Tour May 16 Nice morning weather wise. The
group started breaking up at the 10 mile point with a group of 4 riders
averaging 20 mph. The leader was able to rejoin the lead group at the 22 mile
point using a creative short cut, but got dropped again with about 4 miles
remaining. Riders: Dirk Suereth (leader), Mark Buckwalter, John Glick, Ken
Lessans, Mark Davis , Barry Lavender and Bart Torre
Freeze and Frizz May 19 Only one rider other than the
leader showed, due to threatening weather , although the sun was trying to
break through. But very dark clouds in the west convinced us to cancel this ice
cream ride until another day. Riders: Alan Hurlbut (leader) and Carol
Bowers.
CVHS NH Airport May 22 The ride started out in the
rain, but cleared after a few miles. Riders finished at 19.3 mph. Riders: Paul
& Angela Swarm (leaders), Tim Norejko, Vaughn Good, Dave Harple, Ron
Pfautz, Marlin Hess, Tom Hunt, Dale Burkholder, Ron Herr, Barry Lavender, Frank
Herr, Bill Stevens
Warriors Revenge May 22 It had rained an hour before
the ride, but by the time the ride started the sun was shining brightly. We
started off at a brisk pace, but Steve gave us a break at 101/2 miles, when he
had a flat. After the new tube went flat, everyone became impatient and
continued on. As leader and long time flat fixer, I decided it was my job as
leader to stick around. After replacing the tube with 3 spares, we finally
found one that held air. With the tire repaired, we took off hoping to find the
group waiting at Molly's. Such was not the case. We caught Walt with 5 miles to
go. The rest of the group was gone when Steve and I got back. Riders: Gary
Musser (leader), Walt Linton, Ray Landis, Tom Mellinger, Dave Kessler, Rich
Wagner, Josh Good, John Mullineaux, Carl & Rachel Kreider, Steve Young, F.
Good?, Al Dieffenbach, Jerry Bryant, Loretta Sauder, Andy Smith, Lonnie
Lerew
Roots Action II May 22 The weather was quite overcast
and threatening rain at ride start. However, off to the north west it looked
like it was clearing, so a group of us decided to ride and about 3 miles into
the ride the sun came out and it turned beautiful. So the 6 who decided not to
ride missed a great ride. Riders: Alan Hurlbut (leader), J T Callett, Sylvia
Newcomer, Jim Wentz, Irene Camp, Chip Schaeffer, Dave & Lisa Heck and Steve
Mentzer, plus non-riders Jim Payton, Karen Drawbaugh, John Millineaux, Erik
Fromen, Ed Mowery and Jan Birch
Meadow View May 23 Lots of hills! The fast group took
off and we never saw them again. The rest of us detoured to Sheetz in Mt Joy.
John Gantz & Gary Musser rode over to the Landisville ride. Sylvia came
back to the parking lot and then went to Landisville. I went home, hot &
humid. A "I finally got my T-shirt to stick good" ride. Riders: Ray Landis
(leader), Jim Forster, Mike Lutz, John Gantz, Gary Musser, John Furry, Jerry
Bryant, Sylvia Newcomer, Andy Charles, Don Whitehead, William Crawford, Bob
Brader, Candae Deen, Brian Mitchell, Andrew Mead, Jan Birch, John McKelvey,
Dave Kessler, and Tammy Lovlie
Round About Intercourse May 23 Nice ride in the country
to celebrate Jim's birthday. Riders: Tony LaRosa (leader), Karen Drawbaugh
(sweep), Cindy Snyder, Steve Snyder, Jim Payton, Tom Mellinger, Barb
Koppenhafer, Erik Fromen, Joe Paparo, Marsha Chamberlain, Beth Hendrix, Alta
Nolt, and Jonas Fisher.
Triple Play May 23 It was the first humid weekend of
the season. The Triple Play ride goes around the Rothville area with three
short, steep climbs: Ballstown Road, Briar Hill Road and Log Cabin Road. A LBC
rider from the past, Andy Null, made an appearance. He was riding a good old
fashioned, classic steel bike. Riders: Kyle Awkerman (leader), Ken Stadden,
Rick Lehman, Mark Buckwalter, Denny White, Andy Null and Barry Lavender.
Chicken Barn Ride May 23 Due to the heat, humidity and
a bridge being out, we took a vote and it was unanimous that we avoid the hilly
section north of Mt Joy and so we took the flat route to Sheetz. At Sheetz,
another unanimous vote took us straight back to Landisville. Nobody but Mr.
"Lance" Gantz was unhappy about shortening the ride to 30 miles. Riders: John
Peregoy (leader), Steve Gerber, Dave de Vitry, Dirk Suereth, Gary Musser, John
Gantz, Lou Gray, Craig Shreiner, Sylvia Newcomer and Ron Herr
Ice Cream Topped with Lititz May 26 Riders: Rodney
Moseman (leader), Judy & Alan Hurlbut, Dana, Andrew, Brooke & Savanna
Mead, Gary Musser, Everett & Ellen Newswanger, Barry & Dylan Lavender
and Shawn Firanpel?
Tour of Highville May 29 It started out in the 50's
with a light wind, but warmed up after we started riding. Even with all the
hills this ride includes, we averaged 18.6 mph. That's impressive considering
its still early in the season. Riders: Mark Buckwalter (leader), Paul Smeltz,
Matt London, Ed Fearnow, Ken Lessans, Dale Buckholder, Marlin Hess, Ron Herr,
Frank Herr and Lloyd Gage??
Chickies Creek Long May 29 Very good ride. Weather was
just perfect. Good to see J T and Don back riding with the Club. Riders: Jim
Payton (leader), Karen Drawbaugh (sweep), Barb Koppenhafer, J T Catlett, Anne
Schleef, Alta Nolt, Janielle Willemin, Tammie Calabrese, Tom Mellinger and Don
Doutrich
Get a Life Lament May 29 Riders: Brian Mitchell
(leader), John Renard, John Mullineaux, Joe Bucek, Steve Brainard, Craig
Shreiner, Steve Schmohl, Candae Deen, Gil Linde, Mandy Linde, Lou Gray and
Scott Wagner.
Impromptu May 29 Except for the strong NW wind, it was
a beautiful, pristine day, the first we had had in several weeks. Ten people
showed up, including 3 guests. This was the most I've had on just about any
club ride I've ever led. Everything went along fine until about mile 23, when a
groundhog failed to yield the right-of-way and Dave was unable to avoid hitting
it. He went down, and Steve, who tried to avoid Dave, crashed into him and
landed on his head. His helmet was cracked, but he had no other injury. Dave,
fortunately, only had bruises. The groundhog got away so we could not wreak
vengeance on him/her, and we continued on into Denver for our planned food
stop. The injured parties, along with Jeff and Rich, decided to finish the ride
by the shortest route while the rest of us went on as (un)planned (this was an
impromptu, so we couldn't go on as planned). We had done 42.7 miles at a 11.6
mph pace when we returned to MT High School, within hailing distance of the
advertised 40 miles at 12 mph. A good time was had by all-all that finished. We
do not know how the groundhog enjoyed his jaunt. Riders: Bill Hoffman (leader),
Steve Young, Dave Kessler, John Gantz, Jan Solkov, Paul Benham, Rich Wagner,
Jeff Delong, Ron Callehan, Lonnie Lerew and Zach Lerew.
New Witness Tree Trek May 30 The second day of the
Memorial Day weekend was beautiful and just about perfect for riding and we had
a big crowd to enjoy. Bubba Mullineaux was our designated rabbit and he took
off, allowing the fast group to chase him down and split from the rest of us.
His job being complete, Bubba rejoined the group and we all had a wonderful
day. Everyone sort of met at the Mt. Joy Sheetz (what would we do without our
Sheetz?) and the frivolity started all over again. We actually kept the ride at
the exact pace that was advertised, much to everone's surprise. I tried not to
tire myself out because I was leading the afternoon ride as well. Riders: John
Renard (leader), John Mullineaux, Steve Gerber, Rich Wagner, Joe Paparo, Jim
Forster, Matt London, Kim Lausch, Mike Lutz, Candae Deen, Mark Fulmer, John
Gantz, Brian Mitchell, Lauren Lane, Joe Knepper, Bob Brader, Lou Gray, Steve
Schmohl, Rick Shoup, Craig Shreiner and Lloyd Gage??
Chickies Creek Long May 30 The second ride of the day
was equally as nice. Steve Schmohl, John Gantz and I were the only ones to
enjoy both rides. Of course, John G. needed a few more miles, so he did laps
around the circle at the end of the parking lot at East Pete. He managed to put
on another 8 miles going around in circles. The ride, from beginning to end,
stayed together as a group; however, at one point the leader dropped back to
make sure everyone was OK and turned over the lead (just briefly) to Mr. Gantz,
who reluctantly took charge for about a half mile. The day was great and all
went well; and hopefully evenyone had fun. Riders: John Renard (leader), Irene
Camp, Steve Schmohl, Jonas Fisher, Celeste Neuhard, John Peregoy, Sylvian
Newcomer, John Gantz, Carl Kreider, Gail & Steve Brainard, Henry Manning,
Tammie Calabrese, Jan Solkov, Eleanor Nuffert and Andy Kaufman.
Covered Bridge ¼ Metric May 30 Beautiful day for
a ride. Welcomed two visiting riders from Washington, DC-Ed & June. Shortly
after the start, the fun and excitement began. Ed (the visitor) was having
serious problems with the climbs. Tony (the sweep) took off to locate the
waiting pack. But he missed the turn and sailed right by the group. The long
wait sent the pack back. Barb (the nurse) checked out the situation. Seems Ed
had been advised by his doctor of possible low voltage in his pacemaker battery
(Hello!!) Tony found himself and returned. Dan (the racer) had started the ride
easily and planned to catch us on his second round. (So much for those plans.)
A few miles from the end, he got the call, averaged outrageous MPH to the
finish, and headed his four-wheeled vehicle to the rescue. The balance of the
ride was completed without incident. No medical update from Washington, yet.
Riders: Karen Drawbaugh (leader), Tony LaRosa (sweep), Barb Koppenhafer, Cindy
Snyder, Dan Snyder, Jim Payton, Anne Schleef, Steven Mentzer, Alta Nolt,
Non-LBC members: Ed & June Lane.
Turnpike Tour 2 May 30 A bit cool for late May but
otherwise a nice day for a ride. Visiting riders Kevin & Friederike Jayes
from Raleigh, NC accompanied us. The group broke up at around 15 miles with the
lead group averaging 19 mph. Riders: Dick Suereth (leader), Mark Davis, Mark
Buckwalter, Paul Yatabe, Paul Swarm, Angela Swarm, Ken Lessans, and non-LBC
members Kevin Jayes, Friederike Jayes and Barry Lavender.
Memorial Day Meander May 31 Good turnout despite the
light rain at the start of the ride. Made it back before the real rain hit,
completing an outstanding weekend of riding. Riders: Paul & Angela Swarm
(leader), Dirk Suereth, Ron Lehman, Neil Gussman, Rick Lehman, Jan Felice,
Federike & Kevin Jayes. |
