LBC Rides from the Past - November 2004
Harvest Lititz-Long (C) Nov. 6 Thirteen riders opted to
do the breakfast stop C- ride, instead of the B or C+ rides, on a very windy
morning. As we were assembling bikes for the ride, one of our group realized
that he had ONCE AGAIN left his front wheel
at home. Obviously, Bubba needs more than just a string tied around his finger
to avoid this problem in the future. After borrowing a front wheel from Lew, we
were all finally ready to get on the road to the Family Cupboard for breakfast.
When we got there, people were lined up waiting for tables, but we had called
ahead and got seated quickly. But, because of the long lines, Mr. Gantz decided
to not do breakfast and rode off into the sunshine. At breakfast, we decided to
flatten out the ride somewhat because of the strong winds out of the southwest
right into our faces. So, at Lexington we turned south instead of continuing on
westward. At Doe Run, all but 3 of the group turned right toward Manheim (again
right into the wind), while Harry, Judy and Alan decided to continue south and
home as Alan was feeling weak from immunizations taken during the week
preparatory to going to the Amazon Nov. 27th. Back at Quality Inn, Jim and Phil
came in as they too cut the ride short due to the wind. Riders: Alan Hurlbut
(leader), Judy Hurlbut, Harry Campbell, Jim Payton, Phil Wright, Ray Landis,
John Renard, John Mullineaux, Lew Hershey, Jim Wentz, John Peregoy and Celeste
Neuhard.
Harvest Ride Short (C+) Nov 6 This was the middle-paced
36-mile ride in this second multi-pace ride of the season. Alan led the
"breakfast" ride and Andrew led the faster-paced 52-mile Harvest Ride. It was a
little cool and a little breezy
and a little hilly although I had
modified the cue sheet for this ride in order to avoid the hill climb into
Shoeneck. With the wind at our backs, I led the ride East into Stevens where we
turned around and were greeted with an intermittent head wind. The ride was
also notable for the flat tire I had at around the 10-mile mark. Riders: Joe
Knepper (leader), Don Whitehead, Matt London, Paul Benham, Pearl DeLong, Jeff
DeLong, Roger Sheaffer, Damon Schlott, Randy Haluck.
Harvest Ride - (B) Nov 6 The second edition of an LBC
multi-pace club ride was held on a beautiful fall day. A large group gathered
for the Harvest Ride 52-miler at a B pace (tastes great), the 36-mile C pace
Harvest Ride Lite (less filling), and the 29-mile Harvest Ride with breakfast
(extra filling). John Renard entertained the crowds at the start with his "Oh
no, where's my front wheel" stand-up routine. We sent Joe's Lite group out
first just in case wind or cold got the best of the Tastes Great group and we
needed to cut the ride short. Mother Nature kept us true to the full route by
providing warm temps and wonderful tailwinds for the first 25-30 miles. We
paused near Schoneck to readjust clothing layers. Ed took the prize for most
layers. But we were well past the short cut turn off before we faced the wind
and thus committed to ride the full course and pay back Mother Nature for the
brisk pace afforded by her winds. The winds forced the first split in the group
with Craig and Andrew falling back while Mike, Dirk, and Ed continued pace
making. Eventually the front group dwindled to two as Ed dropped off and was
soon picked up by Craig and Andrew. The peloton worked together to charge into
the wind which seemed to get stronger and move to be straight into our faces as
we progressed. Mike and Dirk took the stage win with an unknown time. The
peloton crossed the line right on the advertised 16mph pace just in time to see
the Breakfast Club riders return. Riders: Andrew Mead (leader),.Mike Lutz, Ed
Fearnow, Dirk Suereth, and Craig Shreiner.
Pedal to Preserve (D) Nov 6 Small (very) group,
beautiful (very) day, windy (very), chilly (very), nice (very) ride. Riders:
Tony LaRosa (leader), Dottie Sheehy and Steve Holland
Northern Exposure (A) Nov 6 It was a nice November
morning. We had a large turnout. Northern Exposure was created by John
Mullineaux. It is a 35-mile loop out of Manheim. The group broke into three
small groups: faster, fast and kind-of-fast. Riders: Kyle Awkerman (leader),
Barry Lavender, Ken Stadden, Mark Buckwalter, Scott Wagner, Glenn Bastian, Dale
Burkholder, Marlin Hess, John Glick, Neil Gussman, Paul Smeltz, Terre
Hockenbrocht, R. Lehman, and non-LBC member Matt Heiser.
Granny to Gretna (B) Nov 7 Awesome day for a bike ride
in November. Temps reaching the 60's and a slight breeze which gave us a nice
push back to Manheim. Bill reminded me of how important it is to stay hydrated.
I thank everyone who came out to ride. Riders: Michael Hendrix (leader), Ed
Fearnow, Mike Lutz, Bill Ambler, Heidi Hendrix and Dirk Suereth.
WEB (Wednesday Early Brunch) Rides for 2004 The frigid
weather of the first Wednesday of this year did not keep 3 riders from
venturing forth in the elements. How did they do it? Double gloves on Harry, a
facemask on John Gantz and carpeting with duct tape covering Bob Brader's shoes
and feet. A week later a bundled up Sylvia pedaled with Harry & John G.
Bill Hoffman braved the cold and icy roads on a snowy Feb. Wednesday. The rest
of us drove in comfort to breakfast during the 2004 winter months. However, by
spring the weekly regulars were faithfully showing up at the Quality Inn
parking lot to pedal to one of our 8 -10 favorite restaurants. On May 5th
Mother Nature again treated us to a sudden burst of unfavorable weather. We'd
just arrived at Brownstown Restaurant to celebrate Carl's 60th when it started
pouring. So all 28 bicycles came inside with us. Once we'd finished eating, the
sun came out and the group was able to enjoy a nice long ride. The next
Wednesday we celebrated Neil Crone's 50th. This group loves birthdays. As an
economy measure, the February birthday honorees passed the same card along from
one week to the next!!! On August 11th while the group was eating at Leola
Family Restaurant, a glance out side showed a torrential rain. A few of us
managed to arrange carpooling home, but the rest pedaled and got drenched to
the skin. Sunshine and roses graced us on most of the rest of these Wednesday
outings. On September 1st Jake brought a long stemmed red rose for each of the
12 women gathered at the start. On October 20, Barry and Marilyn Gelsinger
joined us, having driven to Lancaster from Texas. However they did not travel
the farthest for one of these mid-week LBC breakfast rides, because on October
27th John Farby from Yorkshire, England pedaled with us. It is no wonder that
attendance on this mid-week ride continues to grow each year. 2004 had 20 to 30
weekly regulars with the 1-2 timers swelling the ranks to an all time high of
88 participants for the year. The folks in our LBC certainly are
special---especially those who ride on Wednesday mornings. 2004 WEB
riders are: Harry Campbell, Bob Brader, John Gantz, Lew Hershey, Dottie
Sheehy, Sylvia Newcomer, Chuck Wissing, Rachel & Carl Kreider, Verna &

Eileen's Birthday Ride (A) Nov 14 Neil: Not as crowded
as Five Boro Tour NYC. Our ice cube toes thawed out at breakfast. No one
ordered eggs AND mackerel, but we did eat the pickled cabbage as an appetizer
and sampled the horseradish. The leaves were mostly down, but that made for
better views from atop Schuyhill Mountain Road. We even got our group photo
with a black lab near Pine Grove and Becky Sue went into action and
demonstrated how to recover a camera case from a lab just wanting to romp and
play fetch with it. Riders: Eileen Crone (leader) and Neil Crone (tandem),
David Leroy Troop, and Becky Sue Thompson Troop (tandem), from Lebanon Valley
Bike Club: Eric Walter, Karen Mailen, Joseph Mesics and Scott Blouch.
Down on the Farm (D) Nov 20 It's been reported that
sloppy, wet conditions existed throughout the ride. Three brave soles "stuck it
out." Named leader observed from afar. Thanks for your help, Jim. Riders: Karen
Drawbaugh (leader), Phil Wright, Steve Holland and Jim Payton.
Roots Auction and Return (C) Nov 21 Riders: Diana
Rollin (leader), Steve Holland, Tim Good, Bill Crawford, Bob Land, Matt London,
and non-LBC member Dan Sea
Bigger Lititz Loop (B) Nov 26 This makes leading ride
number 10 for me. I think that if I want another Leader Jersey I will start
working on it sooner. Get's a little cold toward the end of November. Despite
the temperature in the 30's and a steady wind we had a very nice ride. Riders
were: Don Whitehead (leader), Lew Hershey, Damon Schlott, Matt London, Pearl
and Jeff DeLong, Ray Landis, and non LBC member Jason Binkley.
Brown Cow Ride (B) Nov 27 It started out as a
beautiful, calm fall day. On the way over to the Brown Cow Country Market for
breakfast Lew commented that he was enjoying hearing the sound his bike tires
made because it was so calm. However, on the return trip things changed. These
are the comments he emailed me about the ride: wind so fierce that my lips will
probably never heal and I now have a face that looks like I was pulling 10G's
for 2 years, the ride with hills so steep and so often that my knees will never
be the same, and so steep that my lungs burned so bad that I spit fire for 3
hours after the ride (such a kidder!!) On the other hand, my son who was home
for Thanksgiving and never cycles, rode 32 miles of the ride with Myra, just a
little slower pace. Thanks for a great ride!! Riders: Kathy Brugh (leader),
Myra Carter, Lew Hershey, Randy Haluck, Dave Kessler, Joe Knepper, Ray Landis
and Chris Brugh
Penryn Pancake Promenade (C) Nov 27 What started out
being a sunny, cold November morning turned into a sunny, cold very windy
November morning. If one were to level out this advertised flat ride it would
be 80 miles instead of 33. Great crowd. Riders: Jim Payton (leader), Steve
Holland, Don Whitehead, Brian Mitchell, Damon Schlott, Jeff DeLong, Pearl
DeLong, John Gantz, John Donati, John Peregoy, Roger Sheaffer, Doug Stark, Carl
and Rachel Kreider and Bill Ressel.
East Pete West (D) Nov 27 Riders: Dottie Sheehy
(leader), Harry Campbell (sweep), John Rohrkemper, Pam Tronsor, and Carol
Weisser.
Spring Garden Long (B) Nov 28 Rain, rain, and more rain
on the 28th of November. I was to lead a bicycle ride as I remember
9:30 in the morning as I recall Looked outside wet roads and puddles I
saw Decided not to go to the start at Catholic High So if anyone showed
up all I can say is my, my. Riders: Ray Landis (leader)
Heritage Trail (C&D) Nov 28 Can't believe-nobody
showed!!! Rain - rain - rain Riders: Dottie Sheehy (leader)
Chickies Creek Long Nov 28 Afternoon was sunny with
temps in the 50's and a 15 -20 mph wind. Half the group was out of sight early
in the ride and the remaining riders stayed together for the duration of the
ride. Tom developed a slow leak and decided to go directly back. The tail wind
was great and we just kept reminding our selves how much stronger we would be
after riding in the head winds Riders: Rachel Kreider (leader). Carl Kreider,
Harry Campbell, Rick Shoup, Tim Good, Ray Landis, Lew Hershey, Steve Holland,
Tom Mellinger, Tony Denunzio, John Gantz, Bill Crawford, John Peregoy, Damon
Schlott, and Curtis Palmer. |
