LBC Rides from the Past - October 2006
Nowhere in Particular (A) Oct 1 I thought this ride was
going to be cancelled due to rain, but the sun came out just before 9:00 a.m.
and the weather was just about perfect. We averaged a little less than 16 mph
but this is one of the club's most difficult rides. One word of caution: metal
bridges are extremely slippery when wet. Just ask anyone who rode today.
Riders: Mark Buckwalter (leader), Barry Lavender, and Ken Lessans.
County Line (B) Oct 1 The weather cleared leaving a
sunny, warm afternoon. Only a few riders, but we stayed together for a
pleasurable ride. Riders: Roger Sheaffer (leader), Kristine Mehok, and Chris
Laudo. Roots Auction Ride (C) Oct 1 The ride was very routine with only the
wind giving us difficulty riding. Riders: Lloyd Melhorn (leader), Harold
Baughman, Ellen Newswanger, Everett Newswanger, Carl Kreider, and Rachel
Kreider.
Speedwell Forge Loop (C) Oct 1
Roads were wet from an early morning rain before the ride, but became another perfect fall day to be out on the roads for a ride. Unfortunately, the leader was unable to join this ride due to injuries from a ride mishap a week and a half earlier. Steve assumed the role of ride leader for this ride and reported that it was a fine ride. Only one missed turn reported which occurred on the optional loop at the end. So, they added an extra 2 miles but they didn’t mind since it was such a nice day to ride. Couldn’t ask for a better day. Riders: Tom Barron (leader), Stephen Ransing and Kevin Lunz.
Mid-Morning Intercourse Ride (D) Oct 1 Riders: Barb
Koppenhafer (leader), Alta Nolt.
Hex Hollow Ride (Tandem) Oct 1 While the forecast for
the day was for rain, the weather cleared and we had a nice day for a tandem
ride through southern York County. Only one other tandem couple arrived. As we
pedalled through the scenic countryside, Dan told us that he wanted to do this
ride again because he had enjoyed it so much when the TOYS had done this ride.
We had a fine afternoon riding with some good tandem friends. Riders: Joe &
Carolyn Stafford (leaders), Dan & Roxann Bare.
Masonic Home Tour (B) Oct 1 Rain subsided about an hour before
start time. Blue skies ruled but it took about midway through the ride for the
roads to dry. The group split about halfway through the ride with Craig and
myself bringing up the rear at 17.2 mph just slightly above the advertised pace.
Riders: Dirk Suereth (leader), Curtis Palmer, Craig Shreiner, Damon Schlott,
Don Kulp, Warren Buch, and non-LBC member Bart Torre.
Giro d’Earl (C) Oct 1 I was unable to ride with the group, but
reports were that everyone had a good ride with no casualties.
Riders; Carol Weisser (leader), Scott Jones, Judy Flowers, Tom Mellinger,
Mendy Sharir, John Mullineaux, John Renard, Tim Good, Robin Smith, Jim Drumm,
Bob Colton, Tom Craver, Bill Ressel, Greg Mayfield, and David & Kirsten Hirneisen.
Pedal to Preserve [Long] (A) Oct 7
Riders: Curtis Palmer (leader), Damon Schlott, Brian Sowatsky, Warren Buch, Marlin Hess, Kyle Awkerman, Ken Lessans, Joe Hess, and Ken Wareham.
Sundae Evening Social (D) Oct 7 Because Airport Road
was closed I decided to do the ride in reverse with a few other changes so we
could stop at Freeze & Frizz. We enjoyed hot chocolate, compliments of
Jack, instead of ice cream because it was a cool, windy day. The tailwind was
great and the headwind bearable but we were glad to get back to the parking
lot. Riders: Rachel Kreider (leader), Jim Payton, Jim White, and Jack
Mentzer.
Rodney's Retirement Ride #1 (Tandem) Oct 7 Saturday
October 7th was overcast and damp. The temperatures were in the upper 50's.
This was the 11th year for this tandem ride. Five teams showed up. Verna and I
were off the bicycle for over four weeks so the 47 miles were going to be a
challenge. We started at Lititz Springs Park only to find that was the same day
as the Lititz Chocolate Walk making parking a premium. The ride was a new one
developed by me titled Dessert before Lunch. To live up to the name our first
stop was at Lapp's in New Holland for ice cream. From there we wound through
Farmersville and Ephrata to the Udder Choice for lunch and another ice cream
dessert. From there we headed back to Lititz battling a brisk wind. All went
well with no discouraging incidents. Comments were made about how enjoyable the
ride was and they wished the sun could have been out for an even greater ride.
I will probably submit the ride to be considered for the club library. Riders:
Rodney & Verna Moseman (leaders & sweeps), Joe & Carolyn Stafford,
Jay & Joan Thome, Ed & Pat Krebs, and non-LBC members Brian &
Jeanne Hanson.
New Witness Tree Trek (C) Oct 7

New Holland (C) Oct 8
Beautiful day for a ride! One new rider turned back early due to the hills and 13+ mph pace. No lost riders. I guess leading from the back helps! Great company. Thanks to all! Sunday Siesta (B) Oct 8
“It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s–wait, I was right the first time, it was a bird–there are wing imprints on my jersey!” Many of us subconsciously scan the roadside as we cycle, ever vigilant for a wayward squirrel, rabbit, groundhog, possum, skunk, dog, snake, turtle, or–blech–road kill in our path. After Sunday’s ride, Brian Mitchell will begin looking a little higher: A bird in flight actually hit him in the chest! In spite of that little incident, the small but steady B group managed a pace of 17+ on a beautiful afternoon for a long ride. Brian, Lou, and Kent were temporarily lost on Bossler Road, but rumor has it that after a few “Hail Mary” turns, they found Route 441 and caught up to Bill and Nancy at Sheetz. I was supposed to lead the ride for Tom Barron, who is still recovering from his near miss with a harvester and hoping to be back on the bike soon. Unfortunately, all I managed was a preview by car that morning. When I reached the hilly part, I realized my foot wasn’t up to standing on the pedals after a cortisone shot earlier in the week, so I’ll have to try this route another day. In case you’re wondering, the bird survived. So did Brian. Riders: Bill and Nancy “We’re On Cue” Ambler, Brian “Birdman” Mitchell, Jim “Rolling Wheel Gathers No” Moss, Lou “Lost” Gray, and Kent “Led Astray” Shirk. Submitted by Candae “Foot Cramp” Deen (leader).
Kreiders Ice Cream Ride (D) Oct 8 Seven people showed
up for a rewarding ride on a great day. John Peregoy and Celeste Neuhard joined
us at the 10 mile point. The reward was Harry bought everybody an ice cream
cone at Kreider's Restaurant. Riders: Carl Kreider (leader), Rachel Kreider
(sweep), Sal LaRusso, Gary Musser, Harry Campbell, Ray Landis, and Linda
Wagner.
Rodney's Retirement Ride #2 (Tandem) Oct 8 Sunday
October 8th was opposite of the previous days weather. Temperature s were up
about 15 degrees and the sun showed itself making the day a perfect one for a
ride. The 33 mile ride I chose for the day was one I laid out to commemorate
the late LBC member, Charlie Roth's favorite areas to ride. This is also one of
Verna and my favorite areas to ride. The route starts west out of Lititz and
works it's way North to Mountain Road to Clay and back into Lititz. We decided
that we would digress from the cue sheet on the way into Lititz and skirt by
Isaac's for lunch. Two great days of riding with great lunch stops. What could
be better? Riders: Rodney & Verna Moseman (leader) and Joe & Carolyn
Stafford.
Mount Airy Ride (A) Oct 14
We had a chilly start but warmed up quickly with the sunshine and a brisk pace. The group stayed together with a 19.9 mph average. Fortunately, the big horses allowed the leader to sit on the back for most of the ride and we made it back before the wind got serious. Riders: Marlin Hess (leader), Damon Schlott, Scott Wagner, Mark Buckwalter, B. Sowatsky, and non-LBC member Matt Dishart.
Metric Ice Cream Ride (B) Oct 14
Riders: Jeff DeLong (leader) Don Whitehead, Paul Smeltz, Paul Swarm, Steve Mazeski, Rich Wagner, Brian Mitchell, Pearl DeLong, Don Kulp, Dave Kessler, Curtis Palmer, Randy Haluck, Mendy Sharir, Bill Ressel, Diana Rollin, John Lyons, and non-LBC member Ron M?.
Apple Butter Ride (C) Oct 14
I had thought that more folks would join us on such a beautiful day but it was only John and me traveling through the valley. The day started out a little chilly but that soon went away and after a while the “chilly” was replaced by the wind. The wind was a bugger for a while but when it became a tailwind, it was real nice. All-in-all, it was a great day, spent with a great friend—how could it get any better! Riders: John Renard (leader), and John Mullineaux.
East Pete Treat (D) Oct 14
The bright bike outfits competed with the beautiful leaves of fall—all on a wonderful cool day! Riders: Harry Campbell (leader), Jim White (sweep), Jim Payton, Ray Landis, Andy Hessler, Stan Kauffman, and Steve Holland.
Pennsylvania Dutch Ride (A) Oct 15
Riders: Curtis Palmer (leader), Craig Shreiner, Dale Burkholder, Mike Lutz, Damon Schlott, Jon Lyons, Scott Wagner, and Brent Wily.
Eileen's Birthday Ride (B) Oct 15
Here's one ride where the women outnumbered the men! Kristine Mehok, Chris McLaughlin, Kathy Brugh, Lew Hershey, Neil Crone and Eileen Crone rode 75 miles to and from the Landingville, PA fire hall breakfast to celebrate Eileen's 57th birthday, which didn't actually occur until November 4. It was downright cold at 7:30 a.m. for the start but was a beautiful 50-degree afternoon. Chris gets the award for driving the farthest to the ride (from Colombia, MD). Kristine earned the youngest/strongest single rider award...and she's only been riding since June! Lew Hershey won the "coldest hands" contest. For spotting the most dead raccoons, Kathy was tops. And...Neil, of course, told the most jokes and stories to keep everyone entertained. Eileen thanks all the riders for joining her celebration. Riders: Eileen Crone (leader)
Intermediate Picnic Ride (C) Oct 15
A very routine ride except that we rode at a “C” pace. Riders: Lloyd Melhorn (leader), Tim Good, John Mullineaux, Candae Deen, Scott Jones, Carl Kreider, Rick Shoup, Kevin Lunz, Jeff DeLong, Pearl DeLong, Gary Ballina, Amy Mitchell, John Peregoy and Jim Bair.
Chickies Creek Short (D) Oct 15
After a 100-mile savage ride on Saturday, Sunday morning Robin met me for a fast 32-mile ride. I was happy to get back and see seven good riders waiting to do 11 mile “D” ride even though the Pedaller said 17 miles. The group took off and didn’t look back. I lead from the rear at 12.5 avg. When we got back, I asked everyone if they wanted to ride again since the miles were wrong. Carol and Rich took me up on the offer! Thanks everyone for coming out on a cold and windy day! Riders: Jim Drumm (leader), Rich Wagner, Jim Payton, Laura Rozetar, Ray Landis, Harry Campbell, Jim White, and Carol Weisser.
Back Run Ramble (All Class) Oct 21
We had a chilly morning but still over 30 people came out for a beautiful day and a great breakfast at the auction. After breakfast, the group broke into a few smaller groups, which seemed to work out just fine for everyone. It was nice to have Jim Payton and some of the “D” riders join us as well. Riders: John Renard (leader), Bill Ambler, Harry Campbell, Candae Deen, Steve Ransing, Thomas Barron, Eric Evans, Jim Drumm, Dave Heck, Tim Good, John Cardos, Warren Buch, Brian Sowatsky, Dave Kessler, Damon Schlott, Don Kulp, Leo Rosenberger, Ken Lessans, Mendy Sharir, Marilyn Gelsinger, Kevin Lunz, John Donati, Ceci Good, Andy Smith, Joe Beatty, Marlin Hess, Scott Wagner, Gary Ballina, Amy Mitchell, Dave Hirneisen, and non-LBC members Joseph Simora, and Ed Cortz.
Manheim Auction Breakfast Ride (All Class) (D) Oct 21
Went to breakfast at Manheim Auto Auction then “D” group headed back to East Pete. Beautiful day for a late October ride. Welcome new member Emily on her first club ride. Riders: Jim Payton (leader), Emily Sachwald, Harry Campbell, and Amy Mitchell.
Farmland Meander (C) Oct 22
Another blustery fall day. The ride was great while the tailwind lasted. Terry and I found ourselves at the back and decided to do an abbreviated ride at the advertised pace. Although we missed the unicycle group riding down Brethren Church Road, we did manage to finish at the same time as the rest of the group. Riders: Gary Musser (leader), Scott Jones, Jim Forster, Angie Galgon, Jim Bair, Tom Mellinger, Sarah Dempsey, Bill Ressel, Terry Klugh, and non-LBC member Ron Herr.
Three Lakes Loop (A) Oct 22
Riders: Damon Schlott (leader), Dale Burkholder, Craig Shreiner, Mark Buckwalter, Leo Rosenberger, Warren Buch, Curtis Palmer, Don Kulp, Barry Lavender, Scott Wagner, and Mike Lutz.
Hammer Creek (B) Oct 22
Today, Sunday, October 22 I was scheduled to lead a B ride leaving from E-Pete at 12:30pm. I arrived at 12:40, unaware of the dilemma [unusual, humorous and remarkable description all rolled into one]. Harry Campbell rode over to just say "hi" and told me the group already left. In one of my “blonde” or “senior” moments, I said "Why?" "My dear, the ride was scheduled to leave at 12:30; at that, I said "Oh no!". Harry stated that the following riders showed up: Tim Good [Mr.0.02], Bob Colton, Carl Kreider, Mike and Heidi Hendrix [nice to hear that Mike is out riding again after a bout with Lyme's disease] and Harry was not sure who the 6th rider was but stated that he looked like a "real" B-rider. So what are you trying to say Harry?! That young man's name is Tom Hauser. It was a blustery autumn day with peaks of sunshine. To lick my wounds of being a “Johnnie-come-lately,” I offered to sweep the 1 pm D-ride led by Jim Drumm. Returning from riding 13 miles, I got in the car and drove the course somewhat backwards. I forgot that one must go straight on Newport Rd from White Oak. I realized the error once I reached Sheetz off Rte 501. I was back on course once I came to Brubaker Valley and finally caught up with the B-riders at Molly's. Tim had already veered off before then, but Bob, Tom, Heidi and Mike were heading back out to finish the course. Everyone seemed happy, no flats and no other incidents to report. I found Carl inside Molly's supping coffee and reading the Sunday News. Carl bought my cup of coffee and we chatted a few minutes. Carl then headed straight for home. The B-pace was well above the advertised pace of 14 mph. This is my story and I'm sticking to it. Guess my "moniker" should be the leader that sweeps. Riders: Sylvia Newcomer (leader).
Landisville Short (D) Oct 22
When I got to the school, Sylvia showed up and asked if I was going to do her ride? I said no, I’m leading a “D” ride. She though she was leading a “B” ride when Harry informed her that the “B” riders left a half hour ago. She came along on my ride with Ed and Ron. Sylvia swept for me and she was never lost for words! Riders: Jim Drumm (leader), Sylvia Newcomer (sweep), Ed ?, and Ron Mumma.
Manheim Auction Loop (B) Oct 28
Ride report pretty simple today....rained out.....Rained out. Riders: Brian Mitchell (leader)
Warrior’s Revenge (C) Oct 28
Called due to rain/wet conditions. Riders: John Cardos (leader)
Penn Manor Panorama (C) Oct 28
Rain, rain go away so we can pick up trash along the highway and ride our bikes. Riders: Rachel Kreider (leader).
Adopt-A-Highway (D) Oct 28
Rained out. Riders: Barbara Koppenhafer (leader)
Adopt-A-Highway Oct 28
After 3” of rain it made the debris too wet to pick up! We needed waterproof gloves. Rain – rain – rain! Riders: Harry Campbell (leader), Alan Hurlbut, Rodney Moseman, Carl Kreider, and Rachel Kreider.
Stackstown Spin (B) Oct 29
Sunday's B-ride, Stackstown rock'n roll ride saw 7 LBCers show up, but the ladies deferred the ride to the 5 men...the weather saw a mix of clouds and sun and temps in the low 50s. Still felt like winter with winds gusting 25-30mph. Sylvia and Candae waved the following 5 brave bikers off: Brian Mitchell, Damon Schlott, Craig Shreiner, Jim Drumm and Ron. Brian’s comments: "Out of the 5 who started out, 4 finished the ride (Damon, Craig, Jim and me). It was definitely a test of cycling abilities in the 20-30 mph winds. Crosswinds were especially challenging. I was nearly pushed sideways a few times. We averaged about 14.5 mph (but we were riding below 10 mph in the headwinds, and 25-35 mph in the tailwinds!" Riders: Sylvia Newcomer (leader).
Central Manor (A) Oct 29
Nine brave riders showed up on this cool, blustery, very windy morning. We met Mother Nature face to face as we headed out of East Pete (wind gust 30-40 mph) knowing we were in for a tough ride. The plan was to stay as tight as we could in a group and form a wind barrier, and to take short pulls on the front. This worked well for a dead head wind, but the crosswinds were another story, this required leaning your bike about 60 degrees into the wind to counterbalance. Remember , with a head wind and a cross wind, sooner or later you will have a tail wind, and let me tell you that made it all worth while. We were cruising at 30 mph with out much effort. I recall Ken W. saying that you have to train in all weather conditions, but I think all 9 of us were happy when we got back, without any incidents. The projected pace of 17 came up a little short but we came blame this one on MOTHER NATURE. Riders: Warren Buch (leader), Mike Lutz, Barry Lavender, Mark Buckwalter, Ken Lessans, Jon Lyons, Scott Wagner, non- LBC members Ken Wareham and Joe Hess.
Warriors Revenge (B) Oct 29
Wind conditions were terrible, nobody show, ride cancelled. Riders: Jack Bingham (leader).
Landisville Casual Ride (C) Oct 29
Three guys showed up to ride even though it was windy with 50 mph gusts. They didn't seem real anxious to ride but they started out and I drove back home. Lew reported that he and Jim rode as far as Salunga then headed back to East Pete. Tim said he was going as far as Marietta before turning around. Riders: Rachel Kreider (leader), Tim Good, Lew Hershey and Jim Drumm.
Penn Run (C) Oct 29
Ride cancelled due to bad weather! Riders: Tom Barron (leader)
East Pete West (D) Oct 29
The ride blew out! Welcome to Sharon on her first LBC ride. Here’s hoping that calmer winds will greet your next ride. Riders: Harry Campbell (leader), Sharon Gilligan (sweep), Lew Hershey and Ray Landis.
