New Holland Meander Ride Description

LENGTH: 23 miles. Difficulty: C.

STARTING POINT: New Holland Shopping Center, Rt. 23, New Holland.

DESCRIPTION: This is an easy ride through Amish farming country. The ride travels west from New Holland through Bareville, Monterey and Mascot. Enjoy the points of interest and stop for lunch in New Holland. There are several good eating places near the shopping center.

POINTS OF INTEREST:
A. Kauffman's Store (717) 354-4606. No Admission Charge. This is a true country store, established in 1779, and offering country wares of a bygone era. Genuine antiques are sold as well as lovely gifts. Originally, Kauffman's was a general store and tavern house. The historic red brick structure in its early years served as the town hall, post office, and "bank" that loaned money to "persons of good credit". The town jail was located in the basement. Open: Monday - Wednesday: 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday until 5 p.m. Thursday - Friday: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Closed Sunday. Location: 201 - 215 East Main Street, New Holland, PA 17557, on Route 23.

B. Mascot Roller Mill No Admission Charge. Built in 1760, this roller mill was originally powered by the conventional water wheel. Eight sets of 14" steel rollers grind the grain. The mill was modernized in 1905 and the water wheel replaced by efficient water turbines. The mill is operated today only for tourists where fresh corn is milled as a demonstration. Open: Monday, Wednesday, Saturday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., May 1 to October 31. Location: At the intersection of Stumptown and Newport Roads in Mascot, PA.
